So I've been thinking, RED is coming up with all these PRO lenses, and then primes, mini-primes, FF35 electronic...

But, isn't there a demand for decent priced anamorphics?

Don't DPs like the style anamorphic lenses provide you anymore?

Anyway... Just a thought I'd like to hear everyone's opinions.

The only way our program works is to have enough volume to make great things that can be bought by many. There just isn't enough demand for anamorphics... happy that there are some good rental choices out there. We won't build them.

We have a set of HAWK Anamorphics available in New York City if your looking. Cheers. :sifone:

I dunno, Jim. Obviously your more the expert than I, but it sure seems like a hell of a lot of people on this board would love a set of ana lenses. They'd have to be more expensive than your spherical primes, but I bet you'd own the market.

I can understand not jumping into the ana project immediately with everything else you have going, but if your primes are as big a success as I expect they'll be, I'd be shocked if you still decided not to pursue ana glass (and disappointed) :)

Red wont build a quality Anamorphic lens set for 50 000$ to 100 000$ because it is purely impossible and would be an absolute breaktrough in lens design.

I don't think they've got what it takes to pull this one out.:couch:

Seriusly though, I am certain there are a whole lot of people that would buy such a set to go with their Epic FF35, I know I would.

Recently I've been watching some old 50's widescreen movies... was thinking about Technirama, which was a 1.5X anamorphic lens put on an 8-perf 35mm (VistaVision / FF35) camera to get a 2.35 scope image onto a 1.50 : 1 negative.

If FF35 takes off, then the 1.5X anamorphic lens system used for Technirama sounds like it should make a comeback, albeit with newer lenses, not the huge old Technirama lenses like the Delramas.

But it's odd to think that cinema lenses were made back in the 1950's that covered the FF35 format and were anamorphic to boot.

Besides Panavision (PV-mount)?

There are the Hawk anamorphics (V-Series and C-Series), there are JDC Anamorphics (bought by Panavision, but I hear the lenses are sitting in the Panavision Dallas facility for some reason), there are Technovision Anamorphics (used by Storaro on his scope movies starting with "Apocalypse Now", similar to JDC Anamorphics).

For example, "The Interpreter" was shot by Darius Khondji on JDC and Technovision Anamorphics, "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" was shot on Hawk C-Series.

Besides those, there are the Elite Anamorphics, at Clairmont, there are the small Clairmont Anamorphics and the old Todd-AO anamorphics (though they may have sold those). There are the old Lomos.

And then there are the various old scope lenses from the 50's & 60's made in different countries for their version of CinemaScope.

Not sure what of all of these are available for purchase though.

No worries. I was mostly looking for a list to start my research from and that was perfect. I'm pretty sure I'll just be renting anyway.

Thanks!

Hey Gavin, I have a small set of Lomo Round front anamorphics 35mm, 50mm and 75mm T2.4 for rent if your looking to try them out. I love them they are such a cool look. The flares, distortion, shallow depth and oval bokeh is so unique and different compared to standard spherical glass.

Thanks I'll be sure to keep you in mind.

I'm working on a pitch for a PSA concept and still working through the concept. Do you have anything up on Vuze/Vimeo that are good examples for the lomo look? Or DVD recommendations for that matter.

Here are some shots with my lenses

There are quite a few examples out there of the Lomos. Pixelloft has a few videos on his site that were shot with the Lomos. http://www.pixelloft.com/

I know that Brigade Sink Sink Swim, Brigade Stunning, and Pendulum Showdown were all shot with the Lomos. Pretty cool videos too.

They still have the Todd-AO lenses. We were going to rent them and use them on the Red One before the project fell through.

It seems in some ways people were more open to explore new ways of doing things back then? Glad Red is changing things, hopefully they will someday make anamorphic, especially FF35 Anamorphic. Oh by the way, I'M SPARTACUS!
