  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Cookes?

I personally wouldn't let anyone but Arri/Zeiss service MasterPrimes unless it's very simple stuff.

I've seen rental houses do horrible things to lenses and that's why some rental houses demand that other rental houses not open up their lenses.

Absolutely but as far as I understand it will be "everything/anything" when it comes to service and then it'll be a little annoying. BUT this is just what I've heard so lets not dig to deep in to this until we know.

And as of rental houses doing it I wouldn't recommend that either. I'm talking about very experienced lens technicians.

The MP 14mm is actually sharper that MP 35mm or MP 75mm. All of them deliver over 100 lp/mm edge to edge.

Having said that, Red Lenses are nothing to sneeze at and value for money is without precedence.

This is why I said that spec sheets are dangerous (theoretical vs. actual?). You might have a different opinion if you saw both on a lens projector.

Pawel, did you see 14mm MP on the lens projector yet?
I think 14mm MP doesn’t come even close to the 65mm or 75mm MP on the edge.
I agree, at the center it could be the true.
65mm MP has full 100lp/mm at 50% modulation and I am talking edge of the S35 frame here.

Jim, can you verify is only Red will be able to service the RPPs?

48 hour turnaround in most cases from RED... and we'll consider other options. Service is key to any product in this industry.

Jim

2.8's? That's crazy. The s4's are such beautiful lenses, it'd have been nice to have another T2 option from Cooke.

For indie guys, the size of your lighting rig is a big factor too, hats off to RED for going 1.8 on the RPP.

2.8 seems like a decision made in a vacuum.

I've seen the 14mm on a projector twice and hundreds of times in the field. I also tested it on a MTF machine at ARRI. It outresolves MP35 and MP75 as you would not believe :sifone:

To my surprise the MP14 is just as sharp in the far corners as in the centre. I have no idea how they did it, but they did.

I may post some real life frames, if you like. :yikes:

Absolutely and I'm not saying you guys are not trying to give the best kind, but lenses will need TLC and you will probably have a lot of them out there. Now I'm just worried if you can take that heat with the amount of staff you have? Not to think of the hard work you have to put in for making the EPIC/Scarlet dream come true.

So let's say for example collimation - you will let us do that personally with our own lens technicians won't you?

I love Cooke S4s but

2.8 SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! for a prime lens. Leave them at home and just use the zoom.

T2 or better is a must. There have been many times I have been WFO (wide f.. open) on my superspeeds (t1.3) with my Red cameras!!!! So to get up to 2.8 is FOUR TIMES THE LIGHT! Forget the three ton and roll the ten ton truck! Whats that going to cost. A faster box of lenses is way cheaper.

And there is the astechetic quality of opening up and having less in focus!

hehe... yea, but to me f2.8 sounds like mis-information sprinkled with a hint of bad marketing

I wonder if they will cover FF35..?

The new Panchros will cover S35 - they claim a 30mm diagonal, but we'll see if that changes. They will definitely not cover FF35, though. It will be interesting to see the price on them. Personally, I think the Arri / Zeiss compact primes are a far more attractive option at this stage in the game because of the FF35 coverage. They may have mis-matched T-Stops throughout the range, but most are faster than T2.8, the only real downer is the T3.8 18mm. IMO, that's pretty much inexcusable. Inexcusable on the still lens Zeiss ZF model (F=3.5) in the first place -- when they released it, my initial response was, WTF? Really?

I also don't buy into the slower speeds are due to compact size argument. It's true that larger lenses and optical elements will gather more light, and allow for larger apertures at a given focal length, but we also have to consider what has been accomplished with existing fast lenses. Look at the size of the Zeiss Super Speeds or the upcoming Illumina T1.3 primes.

I think Arri/Zeiss and Cooke, and perhaps a couple others, chose a path for new lenses a year or more ago and had no idea what the actual price/performance level of the RED primes would be and the other guys have totally underestimated RED in this regard. The Illumina T1.3 Optar primes are very intriguing as well. I'm sold on the RPPs and can't really justify the Illuminas as well. I also don't have need for T1.3 speeds very often, so I suppose I can still rent super speeds or maybe these new Illuminas if the need arises. I can't wait to check them out though.

I hope RED's 18mm isn't too far down the line. And the 14mm too, if I still have any money left by the time it rolls around.

$14K??? I missed that somewhere. If that's true, these new Cookes just got a whole lot more interesting! With the Cooke name, at $14K they could make a great rental set and they probably make nice images too.

Just to make sure I was clear, I meant misinformation as in competitive misinformation... meaning they may likely come in with a faster speed but don't want to give away their hand till last second.

I agree that the ZF speeds are ridiculous... especially considering their price.

My guess is that the reasoning for the speed of the Zeiss compact cine lenses may be that they are geared for FF35 recording. Taken with a FF35 Epic if you need wider FOV you slap on the 21mm and shoot full frame, while for higher fps stuff you may be a bit limited you will always be able to get the framing at 24fps.

However, if there are good wide FF35 lenses out there I don't understand why they are not offering them? What is the issue?

EDIT:

I find these lenses intriguing, especially if the price point really is $14K for the whole 6 lens set. T2.8 is disappointing though.

Wow! I could see indies pressed for cash needing to buy a set and not being able to spring up the difference... 1 more lens for a few more thousand $ than RPPs... I could see people buying them...

maybe this is all that Cooke had acces to and needed to throw something into the mix before it was too late.

Sorry, this is miss-information. I saw 10,000 euro earlier in the thread, I just now realized it was a joke.
:iamwithstupid:

My more realistic guess would be about 1/2 S4s. So roughly the same price as the Zeiss Compact Primes or the new Illumina S35 primes.

Oh, shut... Though I didn't read the whole thread so I can't complain. Also, if you didn't spot it I likely wouldn't have myself. :(

I am back to thinking the f2.8 is a poker lie.

It would be so much more interesting they would have designed a light T 2,8 or T 2,6 18-50mm covering 32mm. A affordable max. 2kg Version of the Red 18-50mm Zoom (or better 18-60...)
We really get a lot of new primes in the next time on the market, but I don´t know why nobody creates such a light cinema zoom at a price around $8000.- to 10000.-

Pawel, I missed your report, good test.
Thank you for the link.
Didn’t put 14mm on the projector yet myself, well I am not surprised that you did this test twice. It looks unbelievable. 100lp/mm at the edge on 14mm FL
My experience is only down to 16 mm MP, now I know why it took so long for them to introduce 14mm, I guess they use new glass in it.

If you have any frame grabs from 14mm I would appreciate.

Andrew

Does anyone know the REAL price(s) for the new 2.8 Cooke lenses?
