  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Cookes?

at 2.8 through the whole set, it'll be hard for them to compete with the other mass produced lenses.
Love the S4s, thought.

the policy of the big ones to limit the cheaper products in a way, was the reason the red one was and is a huge success.

same will happen with the lenses.
rpp will, if delivered in quantity, become the most used set on earth just for the fact that so much of them will be sold.

cooke- t2.8 because of bla bla reasons
the rebel-i didnt want to spend 500 € more for good mechanics per lens and did get greedy--lenses.
the rehoused expensive as hell still lenses.

as of today...i see 2 lens sets which are really attractive.
the Arri UP
and the RPP---i guess the 18mm will cost a little bit more...6k usd or something.

edit:
ok, cooke doesnt want to piss of the guys who paid 10k pounds per lens....

this is what i like about red, if red can build a 40k camera for 400 usd and still make profit...they would do it. (thinking of scarlet)

after expensive r&d costs i guess a cine lens doesnt cost more than 2000 usd in maufactoring...sold in masses it is a huge profit.
sad that jim is the only one with visions...

UP being twice as expensive…

Hey the 40 YEARS OLD Speed Panchros are smaller than my balls and have T2.1
WhoTF do they think will believe the Bullshit of T2.8 for lightweight reasons.

There's one thing with COOKE and it's their mechanical design. Now I'm not a lens technicians but as far as I know it's very clever and allows for "fairly easy" optical tweaking etc. Then there's the characteristics of COOKE and the fact that they have the /i technology. I believe that RPP'd don't have that anymore? I could be wrong, but then again maybe EPIC/Scarlet leaves that out entirely?

Then there's the weight. They're half the weight of both COOKE S4's and RPP's.

But I agree that one stop is a bit of a killer and that UP's are still heavy contenders although I prefer the look of COOKE.

Judging on the few things Jim let out about RPPs and the fact that RPPs are matched to the sensor, we are up to a pleasant surprise as to the quality.
After all RPPs should be good all the way to 6K, no cine lens on the market can deliver sufficient resolution for 6K below 28mm FL.

I use Cooke S4 as well as MPs. I like Cooke contrast don’t like the resolution, especially in the wide angle range.

The MP 14mm is actually sharper that MP 35mm or MP 75mm. All of them deliver over 100 lp/mm edge to edge.

Having said that, Red Lenses are nothing to sneeze at and value for money is without precedence.

I thought it was funny to see this post:

That's something we'll have to find out. It can "only" be experienced. Everything is a personal preference.

Anyway, a lot of these new lenses brings up the issue of ownership versus rental to me... if I had to buy one of these new low-cost lenses, I'd seriously be looking at the RED primes, or those T/1.4 lenses (Lumas?) just to not feel potentially limited by owning slower lenses. T/2.0 is fast enough for most productions, a good T/1.4 can be a blessing in the right circumstances... but a T/2.8 lens can be potentially limiting. Fine for stunt cameras or as a "B" set of lenses as long as you are also carrying faster lenses, but I'd be a bit nervous about entering a production with only T/2.8 lenses in my arsenal.

Now for a TV show that is mostly shot on T/2.8 zooms, I can see a set of T/2.8 primes for handheld/Steadicam work, if everything is lit to T/2.8 anyway.

But for general ownership for use in a wide variety of productions, I'd think that you'd want lenses that opened to T/2.0 at the least.

I absolutely agree but there are certain aspects that specs for and against the RPP's. They're very big and heavy and they (from what I've heard) will apparently only be serviced by RED. Now the Illumina seems to be avery nice option but I will wait and see and decide as soon as I've seen all the lenses.

I think I'll most probably buy RPP's and my guess is that I will feel they're a little clinical.

I might go for the ARRI compact's for FF shoots when time comes.

I will look at COOKE panchro's just because I really like COOKE. Although I agree that T2.8 is very lame.

Reason for me not going with Illumina is because I have Elites. Not saying there better just don't want to sit on 2 different sets of "russian" lenses. Otherwise I would go for them and possibly RPP's as well. BUT first Illumina's.

I personally wouldn't let anyone but Arri/Zeiss service MasterPrimes unless it's very simple stuff.

I've seen rental houses do horrible things to lenses and that's why some rental houses demand that other rental houses not open up their lenses.
