This helped last year, so a quick reminder for those that have forgotten:
I want to meet as many of you as possible, but it's important to note that my hearing sucks. I mean it really sucks. You will see a hearing aid if you look and think "oh he's hard of hearing in that ear". Close, but the reason there's no hearing aid in the other ear is cause it does not work at all.
My point is: PLEASE come up and say hello, but get my attention, make sure I am looking at you, and SPEAK LOUDLY.
The REDUser event is especially loud so please be sure to "kick it up a notch".
I hate having to do this, and I wish there was something I could do about it, but alas, this is it... I have to live with it, so I ask for a little indulgance.
I will confess something to some of you from last year as part of a "growth experience" for me to improve this year. Here is it:
If you were talking to me, and I was smiling and nodding at you, and was agreeing with whatever you said without adding to the conversation, it meant I was bullshitting my way through the meeting cause I could not hear a word you said. Sorry!
If I think you are a quiet person, I get embarrassed to ask you to speak up since I cannot be sure you will have the vocals to get as loud as I need you. I don't want the conversation to end in frustration for you, or embarrassment for me. So I lie and try to convince you I hear you, when in fact I am looking for a quick exit.
Dispite the pain, I promise to be more honest this year and TRY to tell you "Look, I'd love to speak with you, but I cannot do it here, it's just too loud and you have a wussy voice.... (Ok the last part might not be a good idea...
Ok so you've been warned.. I hope hundreds upon thousands of you will come up say hi, and help me connect the human face to the Avatar on here.
Jarred, when YOU talk to me, be sure to look DOWN!
