We are editing our first RED-acquired spots and are getting stuttering or jumping intermittently on our output QuickTimes. I'm trying to determine if it is an issue with the raw footage, or the compressed outputs.

I'm editing on Final Cut 6, color-correcting with Color, and outputting h264 with compressor (23.976 fps).

Thanks for your help,
Kyle

its the same effect like we are talking about....your dolly shot was too fast for 24p progressive RED.

can you try to watch the qt in vlc player...is it better there?

Kaya, Kyle

It seems that when you play back the vimeo clip the stuttering pattern is different on each play. Its hard for me to tell from the flv but I am guessing you will notice this more prominently on repeated plays of the original source material.

If this is the case, and the stuttering pattern changes, then all the frames ARE there, its just that they are not playing back correctly.

This is why I suggested to you Kaya about switching to still frames and then back to uncompressed. (link to KAYA thread).
BTW – I got your PM, my sincere apologies for not responding.

Another way to trick out the ghosts in the codec would be to switch to PNG codec and then back. Please keep posting your results as I follow this topic with great interest.

EDIT: -- I just downloaded Kyles quicktimes and checked. The stuttering pattern is different on each playback.

I tried rendering tiffs, recompressing to ProRes and then creating the web QuickTime, and I got the same results.

However, I tried playing the files with the VLC media player and it plays without the stuttering. I am beginning to think the problem might not be the footage but is the QuickTime player itself.

Mpeg Streamclip is another player you could try for comparisons
EDIT : I just tried it and there was no difference. VLC seems to be the only player unaffected.
This makes me wonder if it is the same on a PC. I can't tell as I'm on a mac.

mpeg streamclip gives me the same stuttering. I'm going to keep searching to see if it is a QuickTime playback issue. It plays okay in Final Cut and the VLC Media Player.

I can also confirm the better playback from VLC (also on a mac). I wonder what this looks like in Avid?

Edit: Nice and smooth in Media Composer

so if it plays back fine in MC, VLC and FCP it has to be the fugging QT Player.
what about youtube...can you post it there?

but it is just terrible...there has to be way to trick the QT Player.
hello QT player is almost everywhere.

because its not cool to say you cant shoot trains/people/cars passing by (if you move or the subject doesnt matter) :)

any of the red wizzards want to chime in?

the stutter appears in the vimeo clip which means youtube and other flash delivery will also be affected
