  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New German Primes: Price below 10.000 per set.

btw.. miss your astro berlin posts sj

Is it just me or are these lenses kind of pointless with the actual price announcement?

The RPP cost < 20.000 USD for a 5 lenses kit (missing a 18mm prime)
20.000 USD = ~ 16.800 EUR (inkl. 7% european custom for lenses)

The Rebel Lenses come at 17.000 EUR for 5 lenses (missing a 18mm prime)

If I take Laguuns word on the quality (and I personally do), the RL are at the niveau of Ultra Primes.
I also take Jims, Marks and Peters word on quality and they state that the RPP are on a even higher level. Peter says that the RPP "are sharper at T1.8 then MP's at ANY T".

The RPP are a bit better when it comes to T-Stop (1.8 VS 1.9).
Both will cover 32mm image circle = 5K Mysterium X (confirmed by Jim and I think Mitch Gross)
The RPP have a WAY better visual design of the lens itself and I would guess that the mechanics of the RPP are also "at least" at the level of the RL. Possibly WAY better.
Both seem to be designed for microlens sensors like Mysterium and Mysterium X.

Red starts shipping the lenses this week, so I think the average user will have to wait for 1/2 year, could be 1 year. The Rebel Lenses will ship in 3 months.

So ... whats the deal? The Red Pro Primes pretty clearly win in every single comparison. I think waiting 6 month longer for them is worth it.

I don't blame Jan for building a hype on these lenses. I think they were planed at a different pricelevel (maybe 4 or 5 lenses for 10.000 EUR). That indeed would have been a dealbreaker. Even at current price they are a good budget alternative to Ultra Primes or even beat-up used Zeiss-HS. But with the current specs and the RPP as alternative I can't see them sell a lot of sets.

1 year too late or 60% too expensive. And a way to lame marketing name.

Guys, I said this before: Don't hold on price too much for any of these lenses. As the dust settles from all of these lenses being released at once, prices may change. Even listed pricing. We shall see.

I'm sorry these lenses are not as physically pretty as you would like. I know that REDusers seem to think that "badass" industrial design is as important as technical performance. I can tell you that these are telecentric lenses that are optimized for use on a digital sensor with microlenses. This is not necessarily the case for other lenses out there, old or brand new.

These lenses are from IB/E, but the company is working with a Major Optical Company That Everyone Knows so that they can deliver glass in volume with the highest quality and consistency. Don't know the details where the new RED glass comes from other than designed in the US, manufactured in Japan? The Rebel lenses are designed in Germany and manufactured in Germany.

You are embarrassing yourself now. We're not all newbies to this game...

And how many they want to sell of these? Thousands? :out:

I don't care what they look like. If they make great looking pictures, then that's all that counts. If they are truly matched, this could be great kit for a lot of people, not just Red users. If not....

I could be wrong, but from the pictures, you could put a follow focus gear right on them without a ring.

Yes, those large geared rings integrate directly to a follow focus. They are so large because the lens expands and this is to make sure that the lens does not stretch itself right off the follow focus. That thickness should give you an indication of how much the lens expands during focus.

So close...

So close...

I was really hopeful that this would be a 5 lens set. To bad it is only 3 lenses...

As stated above with the price of the 5 lens set being so close to the Red Set, my money goes to the Red set. (Unless these lenses blow the RPP out of the water in image quality.) If I'm paying the "same" amount of money, I'd prefer to get lenses that were standard, and did not expand. While I do not care about the looks, I do care about the mechanics / ease of use.

However, i am still looking forward to checking these lenses out in person at NAB. (As well as the RPP)

Hey IBE, 1955 just called and they want their industrial design back. :yikes:

This is kind of confusing. In the first thread Laguun said these lenses were not made by IB/E but by Schott:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26919&page=2

Laguun told quite a few lies so get over it. The company may of been lying to him so it may not be his fault.

This will go down as the worst marketed product launch in history. IBE should be embarrassed.

Mitch, who will be distributing these REBEL lenses just posted in another forum that he was not really excited about these lenses and that they were an afterthought by the company.

The thing I am happy is that my decision became much easier today. Mark, Peter, and Alex from Otto all have tested the RED lenses and they both are saying very high things about them publicly. Not just nice things but game changing statements. I will take a look at the Zeiss but I am not holding my breath. As of right now, RED's name is on my purchase order. ( 3 sets please )

I don't get this:

"...Could you name anyone who claimed to have used the lenses?
I would be highly interested." (link)

Is that marketing?

Desperate times, Desperate measures.

I hope their optical department is better than their marketing department.

I guess Peter never had an MP in his hands. My comparison of the Red 300mm and MPs showed nearly two fold difference in sharpness and contrast on the MTF machine. MP was fully opened at 1.3 and Red at 2.8 :sifone:

Still, a good lens and I like the Red 300mm. But, horses for courses guys

He never confirmed that what he meant was that RPP @ T1.8 looks sharper than MP @ any T. I think he might have meant RPP is sharper than MP at any speed. Wither way... say RPP is only equal to MP, or close to equal... there is the price. We'll see... well you guys will see at NAB and let me know. Don't lose the faith.

And remember that Pawel owns MPs :)

While the 300mm is a great lens, the lenses that Mark, Alex and Peter have been talking about are the 25, 35, 50, 85 and 100mm RPPs.

Laguun is not an employee of IB/E and I do not know why he stated some of the things he did. I've never met him to communicated with him other than the posts on this forum. He was very excited about these lenses and perhaps his excitement got the better of him.

I think you mis-characterize my comment about the Rebel lenses. We have been working with IB/E for a long time and discussing the development of the Supreme series of lenses (the 14mm T1.8 is the first of these). I learned about the Rebel lenses months ago but IB/E was not sure that they would be ready for awhile so none of us at Abel really put a lot of focus on them. When IB/E informed us that the Rebel lenses would be available to show in time for NAB, we were very surprised and excited. We're always happy to show more options and we never thought of them as some "afterthought" lenses. It was just that we didn't think we'd see them when we did so we were paying attention to other things.

Let's try to put hype and miscommunication behind us all. Come by the booth at NAB or the REDuser party and check out ALL the lenses we have available. The Rebel primes have 18-blade irises which form a near-perfect circle. That's way more that any other lens out there (I have not yet seen the RED primes). They have very pretty bokeh. Come and see.

Now that sounds very nice indeed. For me it will be about price with these lenses, because in the end it doesn't matter what they physically look like. All that matters is what they physically look like :beer::beer:

(as in on image - felt I had to put that in, so there will be no confusion :) )

A near circle will create a nice shape on the bokeh so that is VERY interesting indeed.

The supreme version is going to be nice, especially with a near perfect circle. At some point there was a statement that T1.3 was on it's way? Would that be the rest of the Supreme series?
