ARRI Mattebox Group Buy! Again!

Hi,

I'm in the run to order an MB20II from Arri Munich.... So if the price is cool I'm in!

BTW. Is the MB28 bigger or more compact than the MB20II.

Jeff

Bigger it's the 6x6 inch more or less version of MB20 coming out NOW.

It's bigger, but it weights almost the same as the MB20. It can also fit smaller filters, so if you already have a collection, you should be fine.
MB20 is excellent, but can't fit some of the more popular zooms.
If you want to have ONE that can do it all, get MB28.
Otherwise you may still have to knock on the rentals door.

True but I would say get a decent packaged MB20 II - I suggest 3 filter stage and then save money for a MB28. The MB20 is a delight to work with at first being used to MB18 I thought it was a bit plastic but now I say it's the one to go for.

My 2 cents

Mitch,

So we can keep things realistic here, can you please give us an idea of how many lenses will NOT fit in an MB-20 as opposed to an MB-28?

Something tells me not too many.

MB-28 is great, just make sure you are using the kind of lenses that require it on a regular basis.

Jay

The big monster Optimo 24-290 is the first to come to mind. fter that there are a couple of super wide angle primes like a 10mm. And the Arri Master Zoom (how many of you have ever even seen that puppy? It's a beast.).

The vast, vast majority of lenses are just fine on the MB20-II.

Mitch
i am looking at the MB20 specs, and Please correct me if I am wrong, the maximal adapter ring for it is 128mm.

That means, It may vignette on most of the larger zoom when at its wide end.
Including Cooke 18-100 or 20-100, not sure about Red 18-85

When you remove the rear bellow back, the rear ring of the mattebox is 143mm. That is a perfect fit for the RED 18-85. In fact you might say RED designed it to fit. ;-0 This is also the correct size for the Cooke 18-100 and 20-100.

How about an Angenieux 17-102?

Thinking back to my youth.............

The Ang. 17-102 has a front diameter of 144mm and the rear of the MB20-II is 143mm. I wanna say that there's probably enough wiggle room to make them fit together but I think that one requires hands on testing to be sure.

The front diameter on the Cooke 18-100 is actually 150mm. It will work with the MB20, but you can't get the front of the lens inserted into the rear ring of the mattebox. So a little tape and black wrap, neoprene shroud or other means to help stop light leakage may be necessary. Have to be careful on the wide end. But I've played with this a bit before and it seems to work with RED One 4K being a bit smaller than S35. A 6x6 mattebox is a much better option for the 18-100 if it's something that will be used on the lens regularly.

Jeff, you are correct. Thanks for the clarification. Although not designed for it, the mattebox will cover when used on the RED One.

The MB-28 makes some improvements, no doubt there.. And I am sure ARRI will have no problem with you buying one.

In this case, the strenght of the MB-20 is going to be it's price. Each of you will need to guage this in your decision as to which you are going to buy.

For me personally, I do not use the larger lenses on a consistant basis, so I would take the savings today and rent a larger mattebox when nessesary.

For those that use the really larges lenses, then the 28 will be the way to go.

This I know for sure, there will be no groub buy for the MB-28 anytime soon (I'm not gonna say never, but I can say, don't wait for it)

Jay

Here's something else I can tell you:

The Group Buy price on the MB20-II will be dramatically lower than the price of an MB28.

Yeah.. I'm kind of avoiding the pricing subject until NAB cause I was told too. :couch:

But Mitch is right... There will be quite a difference in price between the two.

:yikes:

Jay

So where is the Group buy info, or did I miss it on some other thread.
