  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi, just a quick wondering...

I have ingested as Prores 422 HQ and the output is to Pal SD.
Can I just export a 720x576 10 bit uncompressed for 16:9 FHA and everything is fine?
Does FCP handle that downconvert well?
BTW, isn´t there a way to go straight to SD from RED?
What is the common workflow for this?

As far as software transcode you can go directly for your R3D files to SD, Just specify your framing / codec in Red Rushes. Or make your ProRes and then throw everything into Compressor afterwards. This should work just fine.

I have heard that compressor is supposed to convert with good results. Shouldn´t FCP handle the downconvert? What happens if I export the 2K timeline to uncompressed SD 10bit for example?
I have a Kona 3 card but I haven´t had time to learn about it yet.

The SD question was acctually FCP related, forgot to mention that, sorry.
It would be great if I could ingest as SD but I guess that will happen in the future.

If you are using RedRushes or Red Alert to create the SD ProRes, I have found it's MUCH better (like seriously much better) to do it to 1024x576 and then change the aspect to anamorphic while editing.

It really crunches up in image when RR/RA goes straight to 720x576 anamorphic for some reason.

The final output is for broadcast, format is m2v and uncompressed audio wich I get from After Effects since compressor doesn´t have the particular settings.

Dont use FCP to down convert it doesnt do this well. Compressor 3 is very good. it uses the same algorithms for temporal and spacial conversion that was built in to Shake.

Use the frame tools to select what's needed. Generaly if your Down converting the 'Better' options os good but if upconverting you need 'best' Same for temporal conversions if loosing frames ie 30 to 25P use Better if going from 25 to 30 use best. Its about a 30% overhead saving in time. Also if your not using the temporal stuff dont have it enabled as it add tot eh render time even though it may not be visably doing anything.

Im told but havent used it yet that the Innobits Purifier app has good spacial conversion. Any one tried this yet ?

I also had a strange artefact apprear on down converting in compressor from HD prores to SD prores. 25P. Some flashing and banding appeared on vertical high contrast areas of picture. In this case black railings on a white back ground on a pan. Changing the codec to SD 10bit uncompressed or DV50 sorted it. Ive never found any satisfactory answer as to why this happened.

I think 10bit uncompressed is safe. Takes up a bit more disk space though. Im sure you can make the presets easily, if you need an examples then I can mail you some for a starting point. mail me if you need any.

If you ever need to do it temporal conversions in Compressor are very good to as its a true motion adaptive or motion compensated transcode, most hardware based units cant do this in HD. But it takes a while even on a fast mac.

Just another thought, itf the target is M2V for something like an Pharos/Omnion play out server, Compressor can do this but I think there's one audio sample rate question, I cant recall what compressor does now with the target sample rate but it works even though the Omnion says it prefres somthing else. I can send the preset if youd like.

About the mv2, I don´t know what system they play it from. All commercials here in Sweden is delivered to a company that distributes the ads to the networks. I have tried to get the needed settings in compressor but I can´t get it to work I have made a preset in After Effects that can handle Main, 422, Iframes what ever that means...
Edit: The video and audio is delivered separatly.

u can also just export a Quicktime from FCP and he would do it with the codec and presets from ur sequence. Then downconvert it by shake, this would give u more control than Compressor 3.
And if u are just burning a DVD, i suggest the Adobe Encore, just send the Quicktime to there and he do all the job.

I have tried compressor with exccelent results straight from the 2K file from FCP.

I have only tested the 10bit uncompressed preset so far.
I have recieved some presets from David wich I haven´t had time to test yet.
Still would like compressor to handle Iframes for my 10Mb m2v files though...
