what is the crop in red rushes for 2.40? Or how can I work it out, I am not mathematically inclined. Thanks in advance.:)

just export 16x9 and add a matte in your NLE. You're going to have to export to 16x9 later on anyway.

I want to cut in the ratio it was filmed, there will be lights and other objects in my 16:9, plus I want to know how to do it in case a client requests rushes cropped or rushes in the size they were filmed, am close to an answer just need to know what 2.40 is in hd, 1920*800 or 1920*803 as aspect widget tells me or 1920*807 as worked out by redcines 2.39.1 mask. Thanks for responding thou Brandon. 2.40 is a commonly used red format, someone on here must know how to handle it in an edit to push out rushes with burnt in markers using red rushes or how to spit out quicktimes that are the size of 2.40 in hd, the trailer on quicktime that are 2.40 are 1920*800, is it therefore logical to assume that is correct. I am working this out as I go just thought I would bounce it on the board and see if someone here knew.

That's what the matte is for. Like I said,if you're going to DVD, Blu Ray, or HDTV, you're going to have to export your 2.40 as a matted 16x9 anyway, so just keep it a matted 16x9 throughout the pipe and don't risk screwing it up :)

That said, 1920x800 sounds reasonable

Thanks Brandon
Due to the unwillingness of my blackmagic card being able to display 2.40 on my monitor or my inability to figure out how to make the card do this, I am willing ti cut in 16-9 matted, how do I matte in red rushes, is there a section on here that describes how to use the crop tools in red rushes, does crop even mean matted?, my test with using crop in red rushes has proved fruitless, with it coming out all screwed up, I know I can use redcine to add the matte and export from there, btu that ties up my mac and I have been burnt before by redcine somehow inventing its own timecodes that were no longer matching anything else, it made the online nightmare, so how do I matte in red rushes, when I shot in 2.40?
cheers

no, just export in 16x9 from red rushes, and add the matte in your NLE (I assume FCP?). Super fast and easy.

I know that is a workaround, but having to add a filter to every clip or nest the sequence at the end of a edit is not what I am after. What is the name of the red post guy? Surely what I am asking is doable.

Both Red Rushes and R3D Data Manager will do the matte. Red Rushes you need to figure out the math and input the coordinates. In R3D Data Manager, its a selection of pull down menus, and it figures out the math for you. Select your shot aspect ratio, shot resolution and your frame aspect ratio and it will calculate where the points should be.

Just checked red rushes and I dont see any option to apply a matte. Crop, yes, but no matte.

Photocon it does not appear that red rushes can not do it, as brandon said it has a crop option, why it has that and not an option to output files with the markings you shoot is beyond me, I do have r3d data manager but that sits on a laptop for data wrangling, i think I might have to concede defeat on this matter.

Grayton,

I hear exactly what you're saying. I am having this issue right now. I want to see an "overlay" in 2.40 when I watch the dailies/do a rough edit. Making a matte or and overlay in photoshop and then rendering a timeline is not a reasonable solution. Maybe in the next rev of Red Rushes? Hey, you can burn in time code, it should be a cinch to make "aspect ratio overlays". I see this thread hasn't been updated since April. Any new news out there on this?
Cheers.

My advice - Render 16:9, Matte the viewing main monitor you are editing with, or hard matte for your projector for rushes (i.e Gaffer or something else, a physical matte.)

Advantage here is that you have room to reframe up or down if need be, and your batch processing is easier. Then Matte in software at the end.

Practical and will take you less time then it took to post this. :)

Thanks for your reply Craig, but I guess I don't really understand what u are saying. Is there another thread I can read about this one? I don't really understand what you mean when you say "matte". Basically, I need to make dailies for the director that have the 2.40x1 aspect overlay'd so he can see it for reference. Cropping does no good b/c he won't be able to see the full frame. Also, there is no monitor for editing at this stage since we are still shooting and we are doing rough cuts of the dailies, basically. After priciple photog, it'll go to a post house where we'll have all the calibrated monitors we need for off and online.

I'm beginning to think there is no way to do what I am trying to do.

Thanks again,
