Hey everyone!

Today I had the outmost pleasure and honor to be the only second one (along with my business partners) after Mark to see first hand the new RED PRIMES. Both Jarred and Jim has taken away 2 hrs from their supper busy lives and showed us the future of our industry (not just the lenses  )... First we were treated to the RED REEL on the SONY's 4K SXRD. That alone left my business partners speechless. First understatement. I don't even have to tell You my reaction... Then came the primes...

What more, I got to see them on the lens projector...

(That's with Ron, the founder & president of MAXX DIGITAL)

I never doubted what Mark posted in his report, but I was never prepared for what I saw. I was able to directly compare the new primes against ARRI primes and the Cooke S4's...

The following six pages should be just blank space, 'cause I am truly speechless...

I have had a very close relationship with ARRI for many years and I absolutely adore both Utra and Master primes. The Cooke S4's don't need any pat on their back from me. But let me emphasize this:

The new RED PRO primes ARE indeed a KILLERS for ANY lenses currently on the market (and I even believe for any more to come...)!!!

And yes - this is another understatement...

Even the sharpest ARRI or COOKE primes have certain fall-off towards their edges, in both sharpness and brightness. The new RED PRO primes has none. Period. I kid You not... In fact, since I am accustomed to see that certain fall-off it almost felt like the new primes are sharper and clearer towards the edges than in the center... RED is bringing the lens projector to NAB and ALL lens manufacturers are welcome to bring their lenses and show them side-by-side with the RED PRO primes. There is no interpretation, no variable conditions, no BS... Just plain and simple "SEE FOR YOURSELF & DECIDE"

This is especially exciting considering that the basic set of 5 RPP's is going to cost less then some individual lenses from the other manufacturers. These new primes are simply the BEST there is at ANY cost. But the best part is that they are extremely affordable too. Anyone considering a prime set for their RED's (or any other PL-based camera) should look no further. There is no better value nor quality (regardless of price) to be found anywhere... (yet another understatement)

And they are about to ship too!!!

We have followed with private meeting about some "other" stuff and there was more understatements to be had...

This is where English has its own limits. I simply can't find the words to describe today's experience at RED. And to say anything about Jim's or Jarred's personalities would be just another understatement...

When we were leaving, Jim has politely asked me to be very direct about my review of the lenses. He wanted nothing more then my true opinion. Be it good or bad. He could not emphasize this point more clearly...

The good news is that I don't have to post any more understatements today. You will all get the opportunity to see all this with Your own eyes next week at the RED Party! Only then You will understand what Mark and I have been trying to explain here. There truly isn't better set of pro PL primes in the known universe...

Yet another understatement...

:) Peter

Peter

I've heard the lenses and projector will be at the Red Party, but will there also be other opportunities at more sober venues ?

Step 1 - Build high resolution camera at revolutionary price

Step 2 - Build high quality optics that are world class at revolutionary price.

Step 3 - ?

Thanks

I will just repeat the words I've said to Jim:

"I truly believe that RED is the ARRI of the new digital age of cinema..."

Show up at the party at 3. You'll still be sober (hopefully) and the lenses will be on display all day.

Sober in Vegas? Steve you need to hang out with me for the week, I'll help you get rid of that sober problem.

I am about as lightweight as they come when it comes to alcohol...

Thanks for the post. Not being in the cine lens world myself, I've never seen a lens projector or even a photo of one before.

It is basically a projector with PL mount, where You can stick in a "slide" of a focus chart, etc... and it will project that chart on a screen through the lens. Then You can judge on the screen how the lens "interprets" the chart in terms of sharpness, brightness (or the evenness of) and geometry...

Peter, great observations about the lenses. It should be a good balance between the production side and the post workflow side at this year's event. There is a lot of interest in lenses. Another understatement right there.

Dammit, I might need these. (might is an understatement)
