Hi, my name is Daniel Urrutia,

I work as a D.O.P. and camera operator in Barcelona.
Im plannig to buy a Scarlet 2/3 C mount and use my set of zeiss T.13 bayonet (Arri SR 2) lenses with it.
Any suggestions in how this "fusion" might be acomplished is greatly appreciated.

And is it true that previous Red One owners have a preferential treatment in scarlet and epic delivery dates?

Thank you all for your input in advance.

RED ONE users will have first priority over the new cameras, at least according to an email I got from their customer service representative.

I'll leave the other bit for those with more experience...

bayonet to C mount

I think you can get Arri Bayonet to PL adapters, and PL to C mount so using those two might work if there is not an interference.

I know you can adapt Arri Standard to C mount, those are a standard adapter, it might be possable to mill some metal off the standard hold to take a bayonet lens since they are similar because the mounts on the Arri BL 35 #1 took both standard and bayonet in their single mount hole.

There may be bayonet to C adapters, but I am not sure if I have seem one or not, less popular than Arri standard to C mount because C mount movie cameras became more or less out of fashion (Filmo) around the time Arri bayonet came on the market...

To see if your lenses project too far back, hold them in front of a mirror reflex C mount camera (not REX) like a Beaulieu, if you can focus at INF when the lens is set at the INF mark and have more than 1mm of air between the back parts of the lens and the C mount then an adapter should be possable. Some wide angle lenses may project back too far and hit some part of the C mount, but the air space in the Scarlet should be deep so the mirror will not be there to hit the back end of the lens...

You can also do the INF+INF test on a C mount TV camera since it will have clear space between the lens and the sensor, like Scarlet will, to make sure the back end on the lens will clear the C mount hole.

Its not a complex part to make, any good machine shop should be able to make such an adapter out of brass in maybe 10 to 20 man/hours. If you have some made make them in two parts so that a backfocus adjustment on fine thread can be used to adjust the backfocus. If you make a small lot order the cost will go down for each, and you can sell the extras at a small profit and get yours in effect for free...

I have seen some people that can make them, the fine thread for back focus is a great idea. Do you think they will throw to far back? I have used them with a PL adapter and had no isues.

Thanks Dan

I have a c-Mt to Arri bayo adapter for sale. It can also accept standard mount lenses as well but only standard mounts lenses that the focus does not turn with the mount.

Tell me more about it, and how much it's in sale for?

I'm really interested in parts that work and I dont have to manufacture or design myself. I dont have a big budget and the scarlet + accesory kit will take most of my savings. So I cant do much testing that will cost me money.

Thank you,

Daniel Urrutia

Interference...

Interference...

Do you think they will throw to far back?

The best way to test the lenses to see if they will fit is to wait until you get your Scarlet with a C mount and set the lens to INF then hold it in front of the lens opening and focus on the Moon. If there is a gap of 1mm or more and evenything is centered and in focus then you should be good to adapt. Some lenses may extent back too wide, but I cannot say without having them to test with.

As so if they will fit on a adapter that is made, if it is known to work with the lenses you have then that is one thing, but you can ask the seller to try the version of the lenses you have to make sure there is no interference.

This seems like the best option for now. Thank you Dan.
I sent several emails to red with my question but none replied.
They must be to buisy building now.
How to contact a seller? Is it possible or are they overwhelmed by the endless mails and calls?

Daniel Urrutia

If you have used your lenses before with a PL adapter, why not just get Scarlet with the PL mount. It is much more robust and convenient than C. Your Zeiss set would be worth converting to PL.

Did you see this above?

Just click on his username "s816mm35mm" to the left and PM him, of find his email at his URL?

Rather than convert the lenses to PL you can just purchase several PL adapters and leave them on the lenses. The backfocus with adapters may not be exact though unless the adaptor has room for shims or adjustment.

Since the 2/3" sensor is smaller in height than a regular 16mm image you may want to purchase some good 5MP C mount machine vision lenses as well, super16 lenses cover a larger image circle and the smallest point the lens can resolve is in ratio to the image circle size, the smaller the image circle the sharper the image all things being equal.

I was thinking about Red when I wrote that.

The PL solution sounds much better, I had the idea thet the 2/3 cinema Scarlet, jus came with the C-mount option and I was wrong. I'm very happy.
This will be much better.

Not that it's important, but mount adapters used to be stated as the lens mount to camera mount. Such as a Arri to "C" mount. A "C" mount to Arri is physically impossible.
