I just received a ANGENIEUX 12-120mm lens today. I was playing with it a little bit, and something doesnt seem right with it. I've never had much experience with 16mm lenses like this, but I was hoping someone could tell me something. The aperature ring is loose. It seems to work okay, but it moves back and forth. I'm willing to bet it's not supposed to do that. Is there a chance this lens has been taken apart before?

That is probably quite an old lens and has been taken apart a few times. Probably not worth spending much money fixing it unless it's the newer HEC version, and even then... Post a picture and someone will ID it.

Ang. 12-120mm Aperture Ring

Ang. 12-120mm Aperture Ring

Hi Folks
The iris ring on all Ang. 16mm zooms of this era is spring loaded (12-120mm, 10-150mm, 9.5-57mm).
It rides on top of a copper-beryllium wave-washer (spring washer) of the same diameter as the ring. It is supposed to have a bit of Axial play. It won't go anywhere, as it is retained by the lens mount itself. You will find no screws at all in the ring itself. As long as the iris is actuating normally, and is stopping in the right spot at T2.2 and T22, it should be fine.

It should be held to the rear by the spring, so that if you push if forward, toward the front element, it springs back toward the mount.
If the ring has no spring-action, and does not return to its normal (rear) postion if you push on it, the spring may be missing or gone flat.

Exercise caution if you ever remove the lens mount, as the iris ring will ride up out of its channel, pushed by its spring and possibly disengage from the iris stem. This is not bad in itself, but can confuse if you're not ready for it. Make sure all shims, and the spring washer go back excactly in order. Cleanliness and a little light synthetic grease will keep it working smoothly.
Regards,

Yeah, I figured it out not too much later after I made that post. It was the mount. It was loose, causing the iris ring to be loose.
