  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Timescapes: Learning to Fly

Yes 5D2 is amazing. So if I understand it correctly you have taken series of shots each 1/2s exposure handhold from a car? First I though you have used the movie feature in the camera, but that cannot be as bright. Thanks.

Very cool clips Tom. Makes me want to get the 5D2 and that 24mm lens and boy were you right about seeing some crazy stuff out in the desert. I'm surprised DOD hasn't called you up yet...or maybe they have. Also those driving shots were awesome.

Dude...amazing pictures and Pink Floyd? What's not to love. Seriously...you've got a great eye and I love these videos. Keep it up man.
Peace,

-Harry

WOW!!! Tom, this is insanely cool

Thanks guys! I really enjoy the feedback. I just added a 1080p direct download link to the OP and to the vimeo page. The 1080p stuff looks really nice, especially the clips I shot full 21MP RAW. I'd love to see them at 4K. :head_explode:

skotak, i used a simple suction mount for the camera that attaches it to my car or windshield for those driving shots.

Hey Tom how do you get around the problem of slight differences in exposures possibly caused by the aperture pinching down for shots?

I assume the EF lenses would have this problem?

That's just beautiful, Tom. :)

I'd love to see those shots in 4K, too!

It seems like if I keep the iris at 5.6 or wider, I don't get that problem. It probably has to do with the quality of the lens, too, I suppose. Another way to get around it would be with a manual focus ring, like on Nikon lenses.

The shutter speed can also introduce variables into the exposure, especially very fast exposures. So I usually bring ISO all the way down and slap on a powerful ND for daylight shooting, to avoid using extremely fast shutter speeds.

Jeff, since I am essentially shooting RAW 5.6K, I think these babies would look very good at 4K! The radio telescope in the moonlight is crazy sharp even at 1:1 pixel ratio at 5.6K. It helps that I was able to pull focus in real time right off the dish with x10 focus confirm, using exposure simulation. I'm hoping DSMC will take some cues from Canon in terms of the focus assist options.

Tom...watched this again this evening. Can't get over how beautiful it is. I've seen some of your other stuff too, but I hope you're especially proud of this one. You should be.
By the way, I know I already said it, but the music is perfect. I espcially love when Nick Mason's voice comes through ("mixture rich...etc...") right with the satellite dish. That visual works very well. I was walking around all afternoon whistling "tongue tied and twisted...just an earthbound misfit." Anyway, I'll stop now. But this is fantastic work Tom. Congratulations.
Peace,

-Harry

Very nice work.

The new dolly stuff is killer.
There are also some nice moving images.
The 5D2 is a great cam for the money.
Now think Scarlet and you all know what Jim and the gang is up to.

Cheers
Tim

Awesome Tom! You can see the advantage of the low light sensitivity of the 5D2. :)

Will I see you at the NAB Red party?

Phil

Thanks Tom. Your work looks beautiful BTW.
