  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing new wide zoom!!!!

Not much focus throw... Is this how it's going to be in the final ?

Yeah busted, but I welcome and applaud the idea of rehousing a most optically excellent lens like this...can't wait to have it.
heck, I hope Stuart rehouses the 24-70mm as well.

Ok, so The PL mount sounds great but a rehousing could also be for the purpose of increasing the focus throw right?

Why stop at the mount? Is it very hard to include the gearing in a bigger housing? A little bigger size wouldn't be much of an issue and people would pay quite a bit for such a lens. Maybe also space out the rings a bit while you are at it.

Duclos...
I wonder what your real opinion about this undertaking is...I mean.. could a lens like this really be on par with a real cine lens?

Things to consider:
Given the fact that auto focus lenses use very light and delicate mechanics to allow the tiny motors to drive the focus, thus leaving loose tolerances and erratic focus pulls...How can a lens like this be made to have the necessary tolerance and non-erratic focus pull?

This is more like a re-engineering job then a rehousing.

Stuart is putting a lot of resources and effort into this lens.

I can't wait.

Don't get me wrong I love Nikon glass- be curious to hear about breathing and focusing ring. What's the price?

The cost will depend on which front you order. The lens will approximately range at $10,500.00 USD, and will be day viewing at the NAB.
Stuart

The focus throw is about double the original lens, and at these wide focal lengths you'll have much more room for error.

Really? If at all possible, I would love a small increase on top of that, but if you've made it 200% already I suspect there may be mechanical limitations. Right?

This is a very politcal question.
I think I'll reserve judgment until Stuart delivers a final product.
Even then, I'm sure his work will speak for itself.
All I will say is that I consider the input of the REDUSER community quite valuable as the members are not only knowledgeable and diverse, but they are the future of the film industry. It would be silly to overlook the input and requests of such a community.

Yes and no. I like to shoot closeups with fairly wide focal lengths, 18mm for instance. Even at T2.8 things can become pretty soft when focus is not nailed correctly. I find the half turn on my MKII 18mm Super Speeds ok but to have the (almost) full turn like you have it on the MKIIIs is much better.

I would really like to see a half turn on his lens.

Unfortunately I cannot make it to the NAB. But you and some other experienced filmakers/DOPs will have a look at this lens, I guess. Please try to include it in your SALT lens shootout and let us know what you think. I think optics will be more than suffcient. My concerns are the mechanics including things like collimated focus marks, maintainance (the lensrepair shops I have worked with in the past, Geckocam, Pille, P&S must be able to service this lens) and of course a meaningful focus throw. A quarter turn seems to be very short, at least in cine lens land.

I'm in the market of s short zoom. The Ang. 16-42 won't do it for me because I cannot use it on 35mm (not dead for me yet) and the Optimo 15-40 is brilliant but does not fit into my budget needs. Red's 18-50 is optically not bad at all but does not meet my requirements otherwise. So here we are. Stuart, make it a real cine lens.

Thank you and yes there is a 24-70 rehoused on its way could not finish the proto type by the NAB some time in June
