Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 DX qick&dirty handheld test

Before as you know well I had some doubts about Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 DX but

after I've got it in a day here in Vienna (Austria is very well supplied and a rich country by the way)

and then did a small test I am now very satisfied with that ultra wide zoom lens purchase.

This test is a handheld footage that I did mostly at the lens widest 11mm but sometimes I did zoom to 16mm that you can have that impression too.

Also I left 15mm rods longer enough that are visible at 11mm wide because of that you get better image about how that lens is actually wide enough.

As I said before at the another tread the lens was mounted on 16:9 Nikon G rotating adapter and then on IMS for Canon EOS on RED1.

Filters: Used ND 0.6 and Circular polarizer 4x4 on Vocas lightweight matte box.

Sound recorded on RED1 with Rode NTG3 condenser mic via line out phantom power 48V supplied by Avid M-Audio MicroTrack II were it is also recorded.

Now I would not talk so much about the lens pros and cons.

It makes no sense that I say anything about that after all...

I'll leave that to the lens test experts anyway :sifone:.

You can download the footage at the link below and then after that may draw your own conclusion about that extraordinary lens.

Hi Sanjin,

Sweet little lense no ?
The color response looks superb.

How do you control the iris ?

Thanks for sharing.

Antoine

Just shot a music video that the editor of Pi is cutting now, and I had a swell experience with that little pup. It was a pleasure, mechanically nothing to write home about at all but the distortion was minimal at 11 and is as echoed around here its a great lens in your Guerrilla kit for the indie guys. I will post some results soon.

Antoine,

lens is pretty sweet and I'm already in love...

I control iris with a litlle bit rotating the lens (explained here)

The clip is done without use of any R3D official apps a la REDAlert, REDCINE, etc....

A "primitive" cutting methodology: Just simply opened all _M_ QuickTime proxies, then copy and paste already made in/out points inside them

to the new movie file and after all export to H264 compression + audio...that's was all.

No CC at all or any other adjustment(s) except that you've got a bit lighter movie file than original

because of the famous QT gamma shift.

True Haskell...plus it will be a very good wide angle zoom for traditional cine style shooters, once Duclos converts it to cine use, with a PL mount, manual iris control, longer barrel rotation, etc. If you haven't, check out the thread here on this lens test forum about that conversion project. Just the fact that traditional cine style guys want to convert the lens for cine style use ought to tell doubters something about the lens - fact is, it rocks!

I'm fine with the stock version, and mounting it on RED with the Underdahl Nikon FX mount. For the genres I usually shoot in, and because me and my crews generally eye focus RED, and we don't use a MB and FF with 35mm stills lenses, leaving the lens stock makes best sense for my use.

Its amazing to pay just $550 USD for a lens for use on RED, and get that quality of image. Lens technology is changing fast my friends...

steve.. leave them out of your way.. some of them think are indies or cine furniture just because they shoot narrative kind.. of garbage most part.. it is a real indie CINE team who's saying.. you steve have a lot more of indie than the usual pseudo cine jerks over here.. just a thought.. to be cine or not to be is not the shooting style.. just a way of attitude you have most part.

<edit> Steve Gibby </edit> rocks.. and is an indie cine guru of true indies.. take that.

A true "indie" from Vienna, a girl with "Kunst" bag, mini skirt, sun glasses... she met a real artist that followed and shot her life with RED1...

... to be continued...

... stay tuned...

Looks Great. I'd title it "Forklift attacks Vienna"

Noticed this on the Birger Lens database thread as focus-OK, Iris-OK so i guess it works fine. Anyone try it on a Birger now that there is full control?

Looks like a sweet lens for the price.

Gotta have it (in your kit)..

Have got a great collection of still photo zooms for use at many types of shooting with RED1:

- Tokina 11-16mm DX f/2.8 APS-C
- Nikon 17-25mm AF-S f/2.8 FF35
- Tamron 28-105mm Adaptall Nikon F f/2.8 FF35
- Tamron 28-300m FD f/3.5-6.3 FF35
- Canon 10-22mm EF-S f/3.5-5.6 APS-C
- Canon 35-105mm FD f/3.5 FF35
- Canon 70-300mm EF f/4-5.6 FF35
- Angenieux 35-70mm FD f/2.5-3.3 FF35
- Angenieux 70-210mm FD f/3.5 FF35
- Sigma 50-500mm EF f/4-6.3 FF35

Has anyone tried the Canon version of the 11-16 Tokina on the Birger Canon Mount? Will that even work?

Michael,
Just noticed that 11-16 has been given the nod on the birger by Alexander Christ - Birger Canon Lens Database thread. GOOD NEWS INDEED!!!

Hey Sanjin,
Nice work man!!! These boards would not be half as interesting without you mate :couch:

Thans Joe,

mostly because of that I'm here!

Although I am happy withmy 11-16mm Tokina, IMHO, the Nikon 14-24mm is 10 times the lens for 3 times the price. The problem with the 14-24mm is front filters without matte box, however.

With Tokina 11-16mm you can use matte box.

Only bad thing is that at 11m has a bit of distortion as you could see at the picture below

(slightly curved lines of the "obelisk" on the left side of the picture)

but at 12-14-16mm the perspective is well corrected.

Shot at 11mm with Tokina 11-16mm DX f/2.8 on RED1.
