  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New round of changes...

The Olsons will be in Vegas with Adobe....how can we get ALL the red party/floorplan activity of RED?

I thought the rumor was the Canon was gonna use some MPEG-4 codec. And by "use some MPEG-4 codec" I mean "be completely uncompetitive with the S35 Scarlet unless it's half the price." But it'll probably be double the price. And then Sony will come out with one that's even MORE expensive AND uses a proprietary format that can only be used on Sony-made devices.

Pfft. These losers don't scare me.

If price/performance ratio value goes up - a positive change - we have a higher price for same or lower performance.

If price/performance ratio value goes down - negative change - we have a lower price for increased performance.

Hard numbers are good.

Let's say we have a static price of 100Monies

100Monies/100Performances = 1 Performance per Money
100Mones/125Performances = .8 Performance per Money.

So by getting more performance per dollar we actually want a negative change in the ratio. :D

Performance/Cost is the ratio that more intuitively works.

I'm pretty sure he just means prices will be the same (maybe lower :D) and performance will be same or (more-realistically) better. I don't think we're talking ratios here, though I do love this performance/monies formula!

Can't wait to hear. Wish I was going to Vegas!

So we all have to wait for the NAB RED Meeting. Please do post your "revelations" then! EDIT- Hadn't read the other new Thread started by Jim. End of Summer? Great! That's what I wanted to hear!

1. No negative price/performance changes.

Dude, higher price for same or lower performance is BAD.

And lower price for increased performance is GOOD.

Couldn't agree more.

For argument's sake, applying let's say a negative change of (-0.5) to the price/performance ratio of 1/1 will result a price/performance ratio of 1/2: same price/better performance (x2).

For a change, 'negative thinking' is not necessarily bad.

I'll think it over a  later tonight. Maybe I'll get even more confused.

Good deal! And nice post Jim. Good luck on the last round of changes. Try to get some rest in between. Keep your crew fresh. We'll see you at the finish line, we'll be cheering you on and taking pictures. We'll also take a picture of Canon trying to catch up behind you (with this lens). Meh, that didn't make a lot of sense but you get the point.

Just a thought

Just a thought

I always love reading Jim's posts...but if none of the changes are announced here until after Jim announces them at the Red User event...

Surely sony and canon etc. will send some R&D guys etc. to the event to hear what Jim has to say...just a thought...thats all...but then again I'm guessing what Jim will announce will be stuff they've already done so the competition will still be behind...

Can't wait to hear all the changes xD

I think you guys are reading too much into the price/performance line. I don't think Jim meant any sort of ratio, but rather that the price or performance of the cameras will not change in a negative way (higher price or lower performance from what we've heard from before).

If anyone was really honest, he didn`t quite say anything. Let`s wait until the announcements and then praise. I`m curious anyways about things coming.

I always thought Nikon should have been the company to take on RED but it appears Canon might be the one. With a few tweaks of the 5D II they'd be very dangerous. It's just a matter of time before they do 24p and figure out the CMOS skewing.

Panasonic are already there. The Lumix GH1 (4/3rds system) was announced at PMA 09 with vastly improved HD video capabilities to the 5D MKII. Continous AF zoom lense (silent motor), internal stereo mic + input for external boom mic, 24p, dedicated video button, etc... Looks like they are getting serious about these hybrids.

Nice to see things moving along, Scarlet still kicks its arse though.

And it will be available in RED. Who said Panasonic doesn't have any humour?

- Carsten

P.S. - funny, their US website cites 24p and 60i/p, while in Europe the say 25p/50i/p. Now 25p certainly is more compatible with european consumer TV standards, but 24p codec rate only for the US?

50/i/p and 60i/p is output rate through HDMI.

Well, the price is getting closer to Scarlet, but the datarate and other specs are not nearly approaching it. Yet the APS-C sensor size. Noise? Who knoiwse...

Anyway - nice thingy for sports and wedding shooters. And for these a simpler workflow with AVCHD.

back to RED...

While the competition maybe starting to pay attention, I honestly think they still are far away to what RED has done and is doing....especially when it comes to camcorders...looking at announcements from Sony and Panasonic so far, it looks like they are still using "old technology"....no 4K, no RAW, no full sensor....and nothing close in the same price range.... Ironically Panasonic had a great chance to compete with the HVX and the Hydra modification ( raw 4:4:4 recording at HD resolution).... But someone killed that technology early on...
Canon 5D MkII maybe getting closer but it's closer to a photo camera than a cinema camera....
Competition is good for all of us.....but RED still rules! ;-)
