  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where'd my image go?!! On set now- please advise!

Greetings fellow travelers...

the issue: while offloading footage from the red drives to computer I noticed the video track, as it were, was missing. Audio was there, and the file sizes indicated video content should be present, but no image.

Went back on set and found that on-camera playback was having same issue.

We have two cameras and were able to determine that it's not a drive problem, but more than likely a camera setting issue. Probably something really dumb, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Went through all the menus and settings are seemingly identical on both cameras.

Just prior to this, our DP was asking me (I'm the Data Wrangler) about differences between Raw, RedSpace, and REC709. As we are both relatively new to this camera I went and did some research. He may have been messing with the menu settings at this point, but I see no reason why these settings should have any effect on monitiring or recording the actual image.

Strangely, when I do recording tests now, and exit on-camera playback the "no image" problem persists until I go into the Video > View sub menu and toggle the aforementioned Raw, RedSpace, REC709 setting back and forth to Raw.

Any ideas? while I wait for Red Tech to call back?

Any insight would be a great help.

Thanks

Chris

What do you mean by 'no image'? Is it black, blue, static, corrupted, or what?

If it opens as black, you need to uncheck "Curves" in the camera. You can make the footage playable in Redcine by selecting NOT to use the camera metadata.

Never mind. Fixed it, with the supremely courteous help of Sean R. from tech support. Somehow we managed to reset the master gamma all the way down so on platback all the RGB sliders were at 0. A click of the "defaults" button in Red Alert showed that the video was indeed there.

I went back into the camera and Restored all three values (System, Look, User) and everything is hunky dory!

Thanks again Sean.

ps: once again "PEBKAC" proves to be the most obvious source of malfunction....

In this case the master gain was turned all the way down.

Chris- I am glad I could be of service. Anytime you need it we're just a call or email away guys...don't go in alone.

Anytime bruddah, unless duty calls. Shoot, I'm not even done with the mountains yet but it's gonna be a great summer.
