I have a project that was shot 4k 23.98fps edited in 1080p 23.98fps. The client needs the final output in 1080i 59.94 quicktime. I take it that 59.94 is the equal to 29.97. Please let me know if I am wrong about that. My main question is, what is the process to take the 1080 23.98 and reconform to 1080 59.94 Quicktime for output. Is this as simple as sending to compressor with a 59.94 frame rate, or is there something more involved.

Thanks in advance for a speedy response to all the people with knowledge.

Your HD-SDI output card should add 3:2 pulldown in real time on play out to your HD deck. No need to do anything with the file.

Oh, I forgot to say, That we do not currently have an HD Deck. So we end up sending the files to another post facility for layoff to tape. Also we are using DG Distribution. They require a H.264 Quicktime that is 1080i. Any Thoughts?

23.976 footage converted to 60i would require pull down insertion, probably 2:3:2:3 cadence would work well. Some says 2:2:2:4 works best but I'd say that is personal preference.

You can place a flattened QT at 23.976 on to 60i timeline. You can set the system preference window and the playback option to be 2:3:2:3 ro 2:2:2:4, so the open timeline feature will automatically insert selected pulldown (it actually even be seleceted in the RT menu in the timeline window, too). Then you can export as QT movie from export.

The compressor can take different approaches by using the frame rate conversion. Place your 23.976 footage, then select the frame control function on, then select the desired rate conversion scheme.

You would see little artifacts (the generated frames would be interlaced) on the result, but that is how usually the movies are converted to 60i.

Kaku, I've never seen FCP insert pulldown on putting a 23.98fps clip on a 29.97fps timeline. I've only seen it add it on playback.

Kaku,

Thanks for the Info. I looked in the playback settings and saw that the pull down was 2:3:2:3. I will roll with that and see what we can get. I will also try a test to see the 2:2:2:4 works better or the same.
