Hi all
in october we got our fantastic RED ONE camera...
we had buyed the camera with the red original nikon mount.
we used the camera for many months all go fine with old nikon lenses and with hasselblad zeiss lenses, we are very happy.
Now we buyed the famous tokina 11 16 fantastic lens for his price.
tokina comes with the lens hood, when we put the hood on the lens
we find that ....... the hood was not on parallel plane.!!
at a deep lookin we found this: the nikon mount is not right in the red camera, we never look at that with the other lenses but with the tokina hood we see the problem.
So what we can say? 500 dollars for a piece of metal that is not vertical? Do you find this problem too?
thanks.
Maicol

hey Maicol, are you sure the mount is seated correctly?

How far off is the lens hood, is it just slightly or is it off by alot. Like Jarred said, make sure you seated the mount properly. Using the screw holes it is possible to place the mount rotated incorrectly on the Red. Just for reference, the red dot should be located on the top right side of the mount.

Hi all
the nikon mount is correcly seat on the red camera. we have tryed to rotate to see if there is any other mode to set the mount but this one is only correct mode.
the problem is on the nikon ring that is assemblated with a 15 degree of error on the black piece of metal that is screwed to red camera.
From what I see here this mount is rotated to rigth 15 degree too:

if you have a simple nikon photographic camera you can see the difference.
I hate to see my tokina hood rotated by right 15 degree but the real issue is that
I'm using a lens rotated can this affect the video ???

Hello everyone,

My name is Igor and I am the co-owner of the Red One Maicol is talking about. We have taken some shots of the mount which I am posting here so that you can see the problem. We don't think this is normal, or if it is, I don't think it should be. Lenses are designed to be mounted straight and I do believe this will effect the picture quality.
We would like to know if this mount can be replaced. If so, please Red representative, send me a pm or email.
Thank you.

Igor

Is the problem that the lens, in seated position, is rotated a couple of degrees further than on your Nikon camera?

I believe mine is like that too, and it shouldn't be a problem. Lenses are designed to make an image circle.

I have 19 different Nikon lenses I use on my RED One cameras. One of my RED cameras has the original RED Nikon mount, and another has the Underdahl Nikon DX mount - so I can use Nikon DX lenses on it, which don't have a manual iris ring.

All of the footage from all of my Nikon lenses on RED, including that shot with the Underdahl mount, has been just fine - and the mount position in your pictures is the same as the mount position of my original Nikon mount. Trust me, it won’t affect your footage in the slightest if the lens hood is a few degrees off center.

Why are you using the Tokina 11-16 zoom on the original Nikon mount? I own and use that same lens on RED, and because it has no manual iris ring, there is no way to control iris on the lens if you use it on the original RED Nikon mount. But you can use that lens on the Underdahl Nikon DX mount, and with the little brass knob on the Underdahl you can control the iris on the lens.

Underdahl (Long Valley) will take your original RED Nikon mount in as a trade-in, and the trade-in cost for their mount is $300 USD plus shipping. By the way, all Nikon lenses, whether they have manual iris rings or not, will work on the Underdahl mount.

Lenses are designed to be mounted straight and I do believe this will effect the picture quality.
To ease your mind on this further, there will be no effect on image quality from mounting a lens rotated any amount. They are not designed to be mounted in any particular rotation (excepting anamorphics, of course), and will function perfectly even if rotated 90 degrees or more.

Hope that helps to relax you regarding shooting on your rig as is...

Cheers,
Dom.

I noticed the off center rotation of the Nikon red mount about 8 months ago.

It is only an issue when you are doing something odd like putting a macro bellows system on the front of it (like I was). It means that the support holes for the bellows are not true to the horizontal plane, the simple solution (from Doug Underhaul) was not to 'click' the bellows/lens fully in so it sits properly centered. It works, but it is not ideal.

Easiest solution I can see is can you rotate the hood on the Tokina? Assuming you're worried about vignetting from the hood. Other than that I can see no reason to stress over the mount being rotated slightly.

It is a bit odd though...

Yes, i admit, it is off, by about 6 degrees or so. I'm not sure why I did this but I think that it was to fit the spring release lever between two of the 8 attachment screws. This came up in another thread months ago for the exact same reason, that is, someone put a petal shaped hood on their zoom and noticed that it was off a bit. Won't affect performance as has been stated.
