Does anyone know of a 100mm bowl receiver that can be mounted to a board?

Hi all. . .

I'm making my cool ladder-esque overhead dolly and I would like to be able to mount a 100mm bowl receiver in the middle of the dolly, essentially flush to the surface of the dolly (much lower than a hi-hat). I want the ability to use my O'Connor 1030HDS head with this new dolly without using a hi-hat. So, I'd like to cut a hole in the dolly, and then screw this mount into the wood and then rest my O'Connor head in the bowl. This will save at least six inches. Clearance underneath isn't an issue.

Does anyone know of any sort of plate-mountable 100mm bowl receiver that I could use for this purpose?

Thanks so much.

Stephen

Sounds like I wanted the exact same thing Stephen. So I went to see a machinist and had him make me a 100mm bowl receiver for my O'Connor 1030HDS.

Then I went to the Metal Supermarket located here locally and had them cut me a few pieces which I just dropped off at the machinist on friday to put together(Screw Holes and thin out the bowl receiver). I hope to have my final product by Monday or Tuesday afternoon.

Total expected cost in Canadian Dollars is $200.

This is all Aluminum with a base plate of 8 inches.

Here is a picture of the pieces.

Adrian's suggested solution might actually be perfect. If it is flat on the bottom (I can't tell if it is just photoshop embellishment or if it is sitting on something to give it that "depth" underneath. Dexter's is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Any chance your machinist would be willing to duplicate a second plate?

Thanks.

Are you only looking for the aluminum bottom plate? Mine is 8" in diameter and I believe 3/8 of an inch thick. I paid just under $15.

It might be best to locate a base plate locally by calling numbers from the yellow pages.

http://www.yellowpages.com/Kansas-City-MO/Steel-Distributors-Warehouses?search_terms=steel

The Product is described as;
ALUMINUM ROUNDS
Grade: 6061 - T6 EXTRUDED
Length: Should only be 3/8 of an inch thick but tell them you really need a straight cut.

They are selling them 6, 7, 7.5, 8 inches in diameter. It might be best to know the diameter of your bowl to decide your base plate diameter.

If you would like, I can get the piece for you and ship it Postal service. Just let me know, but first try and see what is available locally.

If you want the whole setup I'm getting, that too is no problem.

Hi Stephen,

You could also use the Manfrotto 529B Hi Hat, it has holes in the rotatable feet, and the legs can be spread appart flat if you like, allowing you to screw the whole thing to you dolly, if you've made a cut out.

If you're interested I have one, but it isn't compatible with my Miller Arrow 55 head, this is due to the Miller part which screws under the head to hold it in place. I tried a Manfrotto part. but of course Manfrotto and Miller don't have the same threads.

In any case, if you are interested, I'm willing to sell mine, $175 including shipping.

Cheers,
Damien

Damien. . . I have one of those hi-hats. . . I had no idea it would go that far down. . . are you sure? I'll have to try it when I get home. That would be the best of all worlds.

I'm wondering about having a star-ball adapter made. They are $150+ and it seems like a machinist could make it for $50-$75, but I haven't inquired locally. Has anyone had one made? Either that, or a top like Dexter had made, but in 150mm. I mainly want it to mount my Sachtler Studio II head on my EZ-Jib.

Dexter, that is one slick-looking 100mm bowl! I want one. . . PM sent.

The idea of using the Manfrotto 529B high-hat doesn't work for me.

:-(

Hi there, Charles. . .

I looked up several supposed "low-hats" on sites like Filmtools, and what they showed as a low-hat is definitely not what I want. I just want a plate screwed firmly into a board without any supports of any kind. The low-hats I found all have legs, even if they are small. What I want is a flat piece of metal to get as low as possible. . . just imagine Dexter's new high hat sitting on a board.
