  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I´m just testing my new RED ONE camera. I haven´t quite gone through the post workflows yet, and I was wondering how to handle different takes recorded at different resolutions and different frame rates in post.
Let´s say that I´m recording at 4K 2:1 @ 24fps, but I have some takes in between where I decided to shoot at 2K 2:1 so to get 100 fps and therefore avoiding too much flickering. I´ll need to overcrank the 100 fps take to get it to the normal speed within the project. Is it achiveable such a workflow ? Any reccommendations ?...any particular post software better than the other in this matter ?

First, could you clarify exactly what "flickering" you're referring to?

Second, I would recommend you shoot at 96fps if your "base" framerate is 24 as this is just a 400% speedup in post.

Third, if you're on a Mac with Final Cut Studio, you can use Cinema Tools to change the framerate of a Quicktime file permanently; but you might be better off doing the overcrank in your NLE - make sure you tell it to skip frames.
 
You need to figure out what you are trying to accomplish by increasing the framerate. We shoot high framerate 2K on the Red so that we can use it for better slow motion when we play it back at 24fps. Since playback speed is the same between the 2K and 4K footage, there is no real issue to deal with, and there are no different frame rates from the post perspective. We always edit everything at the same frame rate (24p) whether it is HD, 2K or 4K. If instead you are trying accomplish something similar to the smooth motion in 720p60 video, that is something else entirely. Truly mixing that with 4K at 24p in the same project would be a challenge. Please clarify the end result you are looking for.

The issue I´m pointing out is simple. Recording 24p generates strobing / juddering. With the RED ONE, the results seem to be a lot worse than in other 24p cameras. This issue has been highly addresses here and elsewhere. So, when you have fast movement within the frame, the only way to reduce stobing is increasing the frame rate. So, I was wondering; I have one take at 4K 24pfs, then, for the next take, I wanna record it at 96 fps, but I need to go down to 2K to achieve this. Then overcrank 400% this take and finally build my 2-takes project at 24fps. Is there any problem for this in post ?
 
This will work if you are making a 60P project I would think (but better to shoot 120fps and frame blend a bit) and were watching on a 120hz monitoring device. I wouldn't think it would work quite as well if you have a dedicated 24p output but frame addition/blending could generate a certain blurriness that would hide much of the image strobing. Of course, shooting "wide open" will also help by blurring some/much of the foreground/background and allowing the viewer to concentrate on a subject held relatively firm in the frame. Shooting high speed and its subsequent light loss may force this too. Its worth a test. Talk to your post guys, try it and let us know!

I've got a project with one take recorded at 22fps with 24fps sound playback. Is this approach with Cinema Tools the way to salvage the shot?
