  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

canon 500d 1080p video

errr just read the detailed specs...1080p at 20 fps, 720p at 30 fps! right thats just stupid. I just needed 24 or 25 fps from canon and I would have been happy, but they are just teasing! So I guess I won't be bothering to upgrade, and save the money for Red gear!

Unless that's a typo on the spec-sheet at DPreview, the "full HD" video-mode only runs at 20fps for 1920x1080 . . . if that isn't "screwed up", I'm not sure what else would unconditionally qualify it as such . . .

[edit] up, you beat me to it :)[edit]

Yea, you are right. Looks like garbage... it records H.264 .mov's which I am sure some consumers would like, but the framerates mean they won't be able to burn DVDs... so WTF?! Why not ship them with a little vial filled with lead while you are at it, lol...

(16:9) 1920 x 1080P - 20fps?!?!
(16:9) 1280 x 720P - 30fps
(4:3) 640 x 480 - 30fps

And a maximum duration to make it an even sweeter deal of 30min or 4GB!

I can't even make sense of that.

Why is it pathetic????

It's a stills camera that you can shoot 1080p on for the cost of a couple of ND filters. Jeez, some of you need a reality check.

Tell me how much you enjoy that 1080P video at 20 FPS? That'll go really nice with mono audio.

Not really denying the reality of the price point, but it just seemed really odd to advertise something as "Full HD" and forget the frame-rate required in order to make that marketing term fully legit.

"HD" is more than resolution . . . it's a combination of a resolution and frame-rate specification.

Plus, we all know that Canon does indeed understand what frame-rates are at least required . . . for instance they have 1080/30P on the 5D MkII.

It is quite cheap for its features, even without the video mode it would be ok. But it's still pathetic since 1080/20p is just useless. It's like: Here's a Ferrari for the price of a Golf - but you can only make 30mph with it. They could have just sticked to a proper 720p mode and maybe dropped the price a few more bucks to get a serious D90 killer. But this way... nah.

Point being, you couldn't do any of this type of stuff on a stills camera just a few months ago, now you can, thanks to Canon and Nikon. The video specs might not be up to much on this new camera, but it's hardly worth damning Canon as 'pathetic'. It's not a professional stills camera, it's very much aimed at the newbie/hobbyist.

Some people are taking it like a personal insult that this camera doesn't shoot what they'd like it to. As a video camera it looks like a non-starter to me, as a stills camera it looks like a non-starter to me. But it's not aimed at me, which is fine.

Hey, I have a 16mm, hand-cranked camera which runs 16 to 18 fps depending on its mood. And no sound, unless you count the chattering noise. So this is an improvement!

I think everybody's big deal is that Canon knows its framerates yet they simply won't and I do mean WON'T release a 24p capable Video DSLR. Canon could have released 24p with the 5D Mark II, still could with a firmware update, but this camera is proof that they're against releasing a 24p mode on their Video DSLRs. So, the act of putting on some useless stamped on framerate like 20fps is indeed a slap to the face to people wanting to make films with Canon's Video DSLRs.

i'm hoping for a good firmware upgrade on the 5D2.

it will be interesting to see how the ISO is on this 500D

I guess it won't be better or worse than the 50D. Seems to be the same sensor. If the 20fps is indeed true, Canon has once again shown their true ass backwards nature as a company.

I agree 1080p fixed at 20fps is utterly pointless. Sound is one thing as I know you really need to record double system in this case to get the best sound but having your framerate locked in too low is way worse than having it too high (30p or 60p). Professionals won't want it. Consumers won't be able to view it or project it on anything (other than their computer) without first running it through some sort of arcane 20p to 23.97p pullup conversion. It just seems absurd to me too. Too much focus is being placed on the resolution in this scenario too. A well shot movie on 720p at 24p (without jellocam) is going to be a much easier and more enjoyable viewing experience (IMO) than a 1080p film at 20p.

Their customer service will like their management decisions. Will be interesting to listen to their official statements after GH1, probably joined with a sudden firmware release.

I own a 5D MII and the workarounds really don't bother me. I've had to find workarounds ever since I started shooting. But...

20fps is absolutely ridiculous. These guys are really fucking themselves, because I'm done buying canon glass. My Nikon to Canon adapter works flawlessly and once Nikon releases a really good vid/dslr, I'm switching up.
