  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A) Windows Xp pro -sp3 - 3.0 ghz dualcore - 4gb Ram Adobe cs4 apps

B) Mac OSX 10.4.11 dual 2.3 ghz PowerPc G5 - 2.5gb Ram

I have r3d files (4K 2:1) that I would like to finish at 1080p.

Now my problem is that I want to edit in an FCP that is on a g5 powermac (not intel),

but I can't figure out the best way to get the footage in the g5 without losing much in the process. (since I have to render the r3d files in windows first)

I have a windows xp system with adobe cs4 apps so I tried using adobe media encoder as a first step before going on to FCP but with all the options there I couldn't figure out which is the best way to go.

If I am on the wrong track and there is a better way, then I would really appreciate an advice.

I also briefly looked at redcine(xp) and the interface was a bit confusing to me, but more than that it really sowed down my pc and often crashed.

you could use REDCINE to convert your 4K r3d to uncompressed QT - then transfer to FCP on G5

In Redcine when exporting to Quicktime - I can pick:

Raw, Animation, h264, h263, component video, cineform HD 2k/4k, mpeg4 and motion jpeg

by uncompressed do you mean the Raw setting?

Uncompressed 10-bit, the built in FCP codec would be the way to go. That or Apple ProRes, which is also 10 bit, but not uncompressed. These are codecs you choose once you select Quicktime as the file format. You might have to install FCP on the Intel machine in order to get these codecs, or copy them into the Library folder on that mac. To work with a real time supported codec, stick to Uncompressed 10-bit or ProRes. The above you listed will not work as well for your purposes.

Stay within CS4 - there is simply no point you transferring this across to an older and less powerful Mac.

Well that would be more logical, but unfortunately I do not see myself editing on anything other than Final Cut.

I can't really transfer my files into FCP because like I was saying I do not have an inel mac.

I do not mean the RED codec. I mean the uncompressed 10 bit codec, its part of FCP. Transcode to that codec, move your files and edit in FCP if you must.

As was already suggested, why not just cut it using CS4 if you have that on the Intel PC?

I'm not following you, so how do you suggest I transcode to the FCP uncompressed 10 bit codec?, remember this needs to be done on a windows machine as my g5 mac can't handle r3d files

Well I am well experienced in using Final Cut, I know premiere is similar but I just feel much more confident using FCP, maybe as a last resort I can go to premiere.

Edit in CS4... Done.

The only thing the G5 Mac is good for these days would be editing ProRes or other supported codec, assuming you could convert to it on another system. For ProRes or Apple 10bit uncompressed, you will need an Intel Mac to transcode your R3D files. So this is not going to help you.

Just travel the CS4 path...

It looks like I might,

I tried to use redcine and exporting to QT RAW, but after 2 hours of transcoding my 10 seconds of footage the video came out ruined. It actually looks like nothing ive seen b4, just one frozen frame of a weird smear/static kinda thing.

So anyway I'm experimenting now with cs4. I'm getting a lot of errors while doing the final render in AE. like a reading data from file error.

I have no idea if that stuff is caused by bugs in the apps or in my system or codecs

Make sure you have all the latest updates. AE can sometimes cause errors depending on a few factors, some will seem random.

What are your REDCODE settings for output from AE? OLPF compensation should be set to off, it can cause errors and will actually cause 3K footage to render as black or blank frames.

I have r3d files (4K 2:1) that I would like to finish at 1080p.

I am testing my REDONE workflow using my new Extract command that lets users bring in a magazine of footage and extract both the images and sound frames to new shots in my Edit list for trimming and arranging.

I was wondering if any of the R3D files you are working with have embeded audio, a clap board (not needed but to double check), and lip sync?

It would be a big help to me to have some real world R3D files with embeded audio and lip sync for testing the audio part of my REDONE workflow, so if you can share some please PM or email me, thank you.

BTW: since you have a PC if your disk if formatted FAT32 you can download the FreeDOS FAT32 CD and reboot your computer to FreeDOS to run my programs maybe. I know that my program run under XP Home SP3 on some systems, but am not sure about XP Pro's compatability since it is NT. When the FreeDOS CD autorun on reboot menu comes up from the CD, DO NOT select Install, select boot without drivers, otherwise you will overwrite the XP version on your Harddrive! The boot from CD must be enabled in your BIOS setup so that when you reboot the computer will check the CD drive before the harddrive.

Microsoft (tm) messed up the video code in XP (seems to be blocking the changing of the video refresh rate by DOS programs and sets it too low for the monitor sometimes), so I have found I can reboot using FreeDOS to do grading of the key frames, then reboot XP Home to do the frame processing since that does not use graphics modes, thanks Microsoft (tm)... Windows ME rescue boot floppy does not seem to have the refresh issue.

Anyway, any sample R3D with embeded audio or a clapboard and WAV would be helpfull to testing the audio part of my REDONE workflow, anyone?...

I left it at the default (4k) settings, so the OLPF compensation is set to OFF

Hmmm... And you're having problems with Redcine, too? Unfortunately I don't have a suggestion off the top of my head. Seems like a lot more info is needed, as in you may have system or codec issues or other problems that could take a lot more troubleshooting time.

What are your project settings in Premiere? How are you importing to AE? What codec are you trying to render to out of AE (and out of Redcine)?

System specs?

I import the 4k 2:1 r3ds into premiere and after effects, In premiere I've tried 4k full res and quarter res, in after effects under the R3d settings I can't access the part with full, half, etc.., its greyed out.

I tried exporting to several formats, bluray mpeg, wmv, quicktime, mpeg.
But it seems that the only 2 that are reliable are: avi (no compression) and image sequences.

My biggest problem now is that I keep getting this type of error.

After Effects error (4) reading frame from file "E:\DISK\A006_0328bb.RDC\A006_C009_0328bb.R3D"

Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

btw the r3d file is on hdd not card reader

It seems that After Effects will only render if I adjust render settings of output to "quarter".
Any other resolution and I get the "After Effects error (4) reading frame from file" error.

Anyway i thought I should post an update on the situation.
