Maybe I am one of the few but I received an email from RED stating that the 16Gb cards that I have can have their firmware upgraded so they work better with different card readers.

I am not sure what to make of this email. Should I be happy RED is offering this service? Or worried/angry that apparently there is something wrong with my two (550 USD!) 16GB cards and they need to be send back to RED for repair?

My cards work without problems with my LEXAR card reader but what happens if I want to sell them or somebody wants to use them with another reader?

And then the following: RED states they want to upgrade the cards in batches on the 1st and 15th of the month. Which means if they arrive at RED too late it will be another two weeks before they get done. Add to that shipping and it might be three to four weeks before I have my cards back. And this offer ENDS ON JULY 1!

I have always been very happy with RED's service but I find this disappointing.

sander, this service is completely optional. We are not "repairing" the cards - we are updating firmware so the cards can be used with a wider range of external, non-RED CF readers. There is nothing wrong with the cards themselves.

Yes, in order to offer this service (at no cost for the updating to the customer), we have to do it in an efficient manner. Which means we will do updates twice a month for the next three months. We obviously have to dedicate resources to this updating program and need to plan accordingly.

Thanks for your understanding.

Will all new cards be shipped with the updated firmware?

...It seems all my 16GB cards are still in back-order limbo anyway.

We actually are just about out of backorder on those cards. Contact brianb - at - red - dot - com to get squared away, Jeff.

Yes, cards began shipping this past Monday with the new version of firmware.

Thanks for the clarification. Also got notification that my cards should ship out today. :)

Brent,

If my card reader is working fine might I still need the update?

I would recommend it if you ever loan or rent your cards to others who may not be using that reader.

People are starting to take "free upgrades" for granted.

Sheesh.

Yes, it's a free and easy upgrade for people who live close to RED. I would love to send in my cards when I have an alterative available to shoot on, let's say 32GB cards or SSD, but I don't and since I won't have a 4 week window in which my camera is not being used in the next 3 months, this upgrade program is essentially useless for me.

BTW, I don't know but why do you post a comment like this?

Brent,

You mention "non-RED CF readers" I did not know that there is a Red Card reader. I am using the recommended Lexar Firewire 800 reader. Am I in a happy place or on the road to damnation using the new 16gig cards with this reader?

Tom, some people get confused when we say "card reader/writer" - some think we are referring to the one in the CF MODULE in the RED ONE, some think we mean an external one that connects to your computer. So, I am just clarifying that I am talking about a third-party external reader :)

You should be okay with Lexar FW 800.
