There's a lot of Nikkor Nikon lens history on line.. in general

Metal - older
Plastic/rubber - newer

Non AI os older than AI

The focus ring as well - older models have large scalloped focus rings the newer are rubber.

there is a lot of information, but even the pages themselves can be overwhelming.

can non-AI lenses be used on the nikon mount from red? or will the bat ears cause an issue?

saying "rubber is newer, metal is older" is a good start! but doesn't cover me when looking at a description for purchase. i was hoping there would be some designation in the name/description of the lens which would tell me if it was useable or not?

If I understand correctly, you can put ANY Nikon F lens (for SLR camera) on the RED Nikon mount. But the newer G series lenses don't have iris control on the barrel and would need the modified mount to be useful.
