  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Today at RED ...

If I owned them...you would have to prise them from my cold dead hands before I let them go to anyone.

I don't think I would be any good at this renting business...

Just wicked exciting Mark...you are now in the business of making camera geeks salivate...how does it feel?

Mark, did you put an Ultra Prime up on the projector?

How do you feel the Red primes compare to Ultras in terms of mechanics and breathing?

M

How are these going to be sold? First come, first serve or reservation #?

I'm guessing first come, first served. That's how they started selling the new 300mm Pro prime and 18-85. Some people already have reservations for the prime set too. Just as many had reservations for the 18-85. I'm guessing those existing orders will be filled first, people who pass when their number comes up will probably have to step to the end of the line.

Filling orders by camera serial number (or more appropriately by camera delivery date) just doesn't seem to be the best way anymore with over 5000 cameras out there. I just hope they can produce enough of these lenses to meet initial demand and I think a lot of people who keep passing on $15K sets of Zeiss Standards and $45K sets of SuperSpeeds are going to jump all over these.

I looked at all the primes wide open and through the whole range on the projector - on par with the Ultra Primes in mechanics and breathing. A few of the lenses had not been lubricated yet, as they were literally right out of the box - but the ones that were felt great. Seriously, these lenses FAR exceeded my expectations.

Thanks Mark,

I'm honestly surprised at how few people seem to have read this thread based on the number of replies, especially when compared to the 600 + replies Jim's thread on the new Pro series has garnered. Many of us seem to be waiting for the new line of RED products to be released, as there should be something for almost everyone in there, but in the end, many of us also wonder if it's worth the wait. Projects keep coming up, opportunities never cease to present themselves, and being in a gear limbo, although solvable through rental options, is never good. I, for one, have been lined up to buy a couple of REDS for a while now, but decided to wait after the announcements of new cameras. I have gotten by using an old F900 we still own. Then I decided to replace our whole line up of DV cameras that we use for lower end jobs and I wanted to go with the EX-1, but the promise of Scarlet has held me back yet again. When you juggle so many balls in the air in the hopes of perfectly maximizing your budget dollars, many a time, all you wish for is a confirmation that your wait is a wise move, and frankly, you never know until the very thing you've been waiting for is out, and at that point, your expectations may have become unreachably high, or the thing never quite measures up. Jim & Co have been promising great things about their new babies and we know by now they can be trusted, but truth be said, they are notoriously and admirably tight lipped about the quality of their creations, and it is statements like this by professionals like Mark that really allow people like me to breathe a bit easier and be more at peace with the decisions we've made. Nothing is ever perfect, but when someone from a successful company whose philosophy and demand for high quality products you've come to respect lets you know that the very things you've been waiting for exceeds his expectations, then the convoluted future that lies ahead seems brighter...if you excuse the cheesy conclusion :-) Thanks again Mark,

Too Exciting for words

The RED Primes are a fresh sheet of paper design. One of the advantages we have in doing this is to "digitally optimize" the program. The results of center to edge sharpness, lack of CA, and transmission uniformity confirm that the designs are pretty incredible. Even better than we had hoped. The mechanical design mirrors the quality we accomplished with the 18-85mm zoom. Everything we make going forward will be of the type of quality.

I'm going to guess that a lot of the Red Users have been sticking in the Recon area in light of the recent reveals by the Team and the promise of some new reveals in the coming days. I agree, this is some pretty significant new info that the whole community should know (I'm also a bit surprised on the lack of replies, but again, I don't think everyone's aware of it). Maybe it should be linked in one of the Recon threads.

Mark and Jim, this is really exciting. Can't tell ya'll how anxious we are. God Bless and keep it coming. . . .
