Hi,

I just upgraded my 8 core 2.8GHz from 2GB RAM to 16GB and there no different in processing time in Red Rushes? It has been mentioned on this forum many times that 2GB per core is would help a lot in processing time. I have to say that I am little disappointed with this investment.

Please give me your POV.

it probably has to do with the operating system. Most programs run in 32bit meaning they can only use a max of 3gb. The only reason to have more than 3gb of ram, right now, is to run more than one ram intensive program at a time. When snow leopard comes out, most programs will run (or be written to run) in 64bit mode, allowing the use of all your ram.

AE will make use of that ram...
even in 32 bit mode, it uses a number of processes that can access the limit of memory allocation each.

On windows there's 64 bit photoshop as well, and 64 bit syntheyes for PC/MAC, 64 bit LW for PC, 64 bit Maya for PC ect ect
On the Mac side, it is more complicated to implement a 64 bit program, so fewer applications..but that will be remedied in the near future

basically unless the application is 64 bit or specifically designed to use multiple processes...you won't see much of a difference

I have no idea about the gestion of ram in red rush, but

the actual problem with osx is that they have locked carbon to 32bit, meaning that only applications that use cocoa can be 64bit with graphic interface under osx. Cinema4D is one of them, but why adobe has not yet photoshop 64bit under osx might have to do with that. For sure SilouhetteFX doesn't exist in 64bit flavour under osx for that reason. So if apple continue this politics with snow leopard it might take a bit more time for most programs to have a 64bit version on mac.

cheers,
antoine.

Snow leopard is pretty much going to be a 64bit version of leopard. That's the main feature of the new OS. We can only hope they're developing fcp in 64bit mode right now. Also, another big feature is making use of the GPU. ZOMG, that's going to speed everything (rendering wise) way the eff up. I'm excited as you can see!
