Airing dirty laundry in public can really be uncomfortable and no one has to chime in, reply, or even read any further. If you have a problem with this, then stop now and simply close the browser window. But it's not about taking sides, it's just about (acurate) information that may help someone else. If one person is saved the headaches and wasted money that we are out, then it's worth the risk. I would want to know any bad experiences buyers have had shared publically and wish I did prior to spending the money we have and lost the time waiting. At this point there is no other choice and to be honest, I'm tired of getting screwed and not speaking up.

While this post is not about time, I have spent $25,000+ on 20 lenses with broker Sergey Kravchenco and have had to wait up to 9 weeks with absolutely no regard to even reply or stay in touch. Not 3-4 weeks with some occasionally contact, but nothing. When he did get back, I immediately came on here and updated my post about his absence. Now I have to deal with lenses in unusable condition and untrue statements and cover-up's, not only from the original post when he listed the lenses but now in email messages. This is not a lot of money by any means but nonetheless, it is money. And we have to spend almost the same amount to fix all 20 lenses to the point of being even usable.

It is important to say that I know there have been others who have been satisfied with the lenses that they have purchased from Sergey and I got referrals before my first purchase last summer.. So this may be isolated but it's not by accident and it's happened three separate times with a lot of lenses. We have intentionally been misinformed several times.

The most recent purchase was a set of 4 old Zeiss/Opton super speeds. At the time, we were just wrapping up the first round of capital investment expenditures and were winding down. So the price was right and I (thought) I knew what we were getting into based on what we were being told. I fully expected to have to put some money into the lenses and inquired to Sergey repeatedly pre-sale about any potential issues. But I never expected he lenses to be unusable. Here's the original and much discussed post.

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20470&highlight=Sergey

After waiting almost 9 weeks with not a word back and even a "where are you Sergey?" post here, I received the set of Opton Superspeed lenses we bought, our 3rd pair from you. Immediately we discovered the focus was tight on few lenses... so tight in one case it was unusable with a follow focus. Two of the lens gears were falling off and the overall visual condition was a 5 at best. And an extremely deep scratch on the 35mm was present and it had been described to us and publically as a 'mark'. I had received full disclose from Sergey on the internal condition and was assured quality and that's what matters the most. The exterior can be cleaned up nicely, 80mm fronts, some paint and general housekeeping and they'll look great. The inside mechanicals are a different story entirely.

As with any lens set we buy, they go off for a check prior to renting. I'd never let anything go out with out having the piece of mind that we can stand behind the set. knowing there might be some big issues, we sent the set to Charles Pickelt at Serious Gear. He spent a good few days with the lenses and called, I think to prepare me for the bad news coming via email. Really bad news. To make sure there is no miscommunication or mistakes made in transcribing what I was told, here is the statement of work instead, verbatim.

"Attached is a rough estimate for repairs to the Opton T1.4 super speeds. These are in very rough shape. I am inquiring through my inside sources about the cost/availability of a front element for the 35mm and a rear for the 50mm. Also waiting for prices on better PL mounts. The Russian ones that were on there are atrocious. They don't even sit on a reference surface intended for mounts. They sit on the exterior lens barrel! We might be able to make them work, but it may cost as much in labor as just buying in some better mounts."

As Charles has stated these may or may not even be repairable, and the quoted costs to repair them (if possible) to the point of being usable was quite a shock.

Then there is the 11 lens LOMO set and the most recent 4 LOMO Superspeeds that were sent to Paul Duclos for very extreme repairs to get them to the point that we can rent them.. do we even need to get into these?

Sergey, I urge you to reply. Lets find a way to work together, no finger pointing, you have heard my side. I'm looking for a solution, not a refund unless they cannot even be fixed which Charles will not know until next week. This is only one side of the story and it's critical to hear both. In your exact words tonight you wrote " I wrote to you that lens F = 35 mm has little scratch near center and especially attach photo of this defect". Sergey, please re-read your original post which I provided a link for above. This is not a little mark as you stated, the phot you sent did not show the depth of the scrstch.. The lens is unusable. And what about all of the other 19 lenses that we cannot use? You didn't mention them in your email? But you have my benefit of a doubt. If you want to make this right, please get back in touch with your thoughts for a solution that works for us both and I'd be happy to update. But your last message clearly indicated again, that there was nothing wrong with any of the lenses we bought from you and we were on our own.

Respectfully,
Billy

Hi Billy !

If you wrote that first tme has bought from me AWFUL , BAD , BAD set of lenses - WHY !!! you some month later at once bought from me set of lenses ...

1 – I am always try to describe lenses very attentively and any people who look at photo with lens Zeiss F = 35 mm can perfectly sees that it not a SCRATCH – only mark on multicoatin as I described .
2 – Together with used Zeiss Super Speed lenses in one parcel you have received Zeiss OPton Standard Speed F = 40mm/2 ser.# 7088920 ( ABSOLUTELY NEW ) – estimate $ 5000 – WITHOUT any PAYMENT !!! NOT BAD…
3 - I suggested you to compensate your expenses and have agreed to make repair of the objectives broken by you without any payment
4 - I am not guilty that when you had a rest for New Year you have lost your equipment and now you malicious for the whole world …

Your message :

Sergey, I am just now home from holiday. We have a robbery and the theft stole $140,000 in equipment. So I am very sorry but I will go this week to pay for the 40mm lens. How much is due again?
Also, I hear that the lenses I send to you are on the way back to me. When they return, should I try to resend to you again>? What do I do different this time so no problems?
Kind regards my friend always,
Billy

If anybody from buyers found problems in my lenses - I always compensate it!
Best regards

Sergey

I'm not blaming anyone for the theft Sergey? Malicious? Quote the opposite. I have taken it in stride and moved on. No one has heard us whining.

I have a lens tech tell me that the lens is scratched and needs to be replaced. While you have a genuine offer the fix the repairs, why would I send them back to you when the lenses should have been delivered as you described to begin with?

And you did not tell me 40mm was no change.. you send me bank details every few days with demand for payment. Which I will make because I gave my word.

Sergey, we can take this offline if you wish to solve these problems . I would like to send the Opton set back for a full refund and you can deal with the repairs and then resell them. I hear all the time that brokers stand behind the sale of their lenses yet I have several sets that were delivered a mess and now I don’t hear from them anymore.

Regards,
Billy

Sergey, I need to hear from you. This is not going away. I asked for you to contact me privately.

Billy

Hi There - I recently purchased a lens from you Sergey and, following some issues with it which I wanted to discuss, asked you to contact me through several different emails - all of which you have ignored Sergey. Can you please contact me? It is very unprofessional for you to not respond to emails from a lens purchaser who has some questions (I told you I would have no choice but to contact you through a public forum if you didn't answer) - Please reply to my emails.

I've been Sergey's customer too. As well, my partners. I can understand your reasons about lack of communication at times. Nevertheless, I must add something in his defense. First off, he's not an english native speaker, 2ndly he lives in a different world for those who hadn't noticed yet. He travels a lot, sometimes without net access far away from home. That's where he's used to find the good stuff for us. Nothing that hadn't already been said to my partners, actually.

I've been waiting for a reply from him comprehending an order/purchase nowadays. But I believe that he shall honour his clients and he will for sure. Be patient. After all, it's his business, as matter of fact.

Hope it helps!

Emanuel :-)

I'm really sorry about hearing that you guys have problems with Sergey he has nothing but been good to me. I hope it all resolves for you. I just want to warn you all that it's not the Russians alone that are a "problem" I have a massive problem with Ken Rich "The Power Broker". If you think a couple of weeks of no proper response and wait for your lenses to turn up is bad, try 9 MONTHS!!! I will also do my dirty laundry on him very soon after my lawyers has contacted him. If anyone here knows him, contact him and ask him to contact me asap (just so you know we're talking substantial amounts of $ here) so it can be resolved before I go public.

Sure it will. As said, I have nothing to say about Sergey unless good things. Be patient, that's all I can say so far. Your lenses will come.

I have a massive problem with Ken Rich "The Power Broker"

Yeah, he sold me a cooke zoom that he didn't have. Then told me he'd look for another one, then several months of no contact, then finally I got a lens.

A note about buying old lenses (or even new ones) from eastern europe. ANYTHING you buy from there is going to need complete service. Even NOS lenses from '91 have been sitting on a shelf full of old russian grease for more than 15 years. I think everyone who has mentioned anything about Lomos, anamorphics, or anything from over there has said this. Build it into your costs. Also, a guy in the Ukraine may have different standards than you do as to what constitutes good condition. Use your head, look at pictures carefully, ask for more pictures. If there is obvious brassing and wear on the lens barrel, then what kind of conclusions can you draw about the inside? On the Lomos look for wear on the Oct 19 mount, most of them are aluminum, and they show wear very clearly.

Take any description with a grain of salt and have realistic expectations.

Cheers,

Nick

As Michael Duclos has made graphically clear, you can't evaluate a lens from an ebay photograph. If you are going to buy a Russian lens (and actually, any used lens) you have to either factor in some chance that it is going to be a lemon (so don't pay too much for it) or, if you can buy them in the States, make sure you get an approval period. Buying used lenses, like buying used cars, can have a happy or sad ending, depending on the honesty and reliability of the seller, basic price (low enough so that you can still afford to send them to the lens hospital for cleaning and overhaul) and dumb luck.

Nick is right--if you are going to use these lenses in any kind of professional capacity (as distinct from personal projects) they will need cleaning, re-lubing and calumniation (sp?) at the very least. The good news is, if the glass is good, and the mechanics are basically sound, and the original price is cheap enough, you will get some pretty fine lenses when they come back from the lens hospital for a very reasonable price. But part of that price will probably be one or two shredder lenses...

Sergey. We had a contact on Ebay about buying a Canon telephoto lens from you, but other Ebayers warned me for buying your equipment.
Please, please dont mess up this kind of affairs. We cinematographers are a very small family - compared to other professions. Why in the first place selling lenses that cant be fixed?
Where do you get them from?
Regards,
/Ronnie

Sergey, facts speak louder than words.

I have THREE private messages this week alone from people that feel ripped off, yet are most likely afraid to speak up publically in fear of retaliation. But I won’t ever go away. Some are ready to board a plane to find you as the community is small and you should be held accountable like any other dealer. There were times that you disappeared on me for months claiming family sickness, your own sickness, even the weather?!?? I genuinely hope everyone is feeling better so you can get back to business. You have jerked around on pricing even trying to gouge people here for more than you have sold on eBay.

In the end I got every lens, but in unusable condition. F*%$-ing rubbish and the cost to repair far exceeds the purchase price. I will go on record blaming only myself for being impulsive and not heeding advice I have heard and even given many times; if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. I was new to the rental business a year ago and was anxious to build up our inventory of lenses. I did my homework in asking around and did hear from satisfied customers which have posted here. In hindsight it seems to be the exception. There are some heavy hitters that frequent these boards, not just ignorant suckers like me. Isn’t your reputation important in such a small community?

You should satisfy every customer or at least shoot for more than 50%. I won’t tell you how to run your business any more than I want your advice on my own, but $25k is a lot of money for a startup and I’m not going to be quiet either. I don’t have an agenda to slander you, this is about facts. I will never sell these lenses because my reputation means the world to me, even to some unanimous buyer on eBay. I will one day get them all repaired and in work-able condition. Although potential buyers should ask around and see if the mechanical quality of LOMO lenses is worth the price.

Sergey, in my opinion (and that’s what a public forum is for) you should not be here selling lenses, or anything for that matter. Lenses are not used cars. In the end you will be your own un-doing, not me. Only time will tell as there are a lot of people waiting for delivery and hopefully then more will speak up, for better or worse. This way others can decide with full disclosure how to spend their very hard earned money.

Care to make an appearance? Your public is waiting…

Billy

PS. Again, sorry if this posts is less than entertaining. I’m not laughing either.

I really appreciate the comments, but I actually feel bad for Sergey. I know his English is not perfect and everyone makes mistakes. Wow, have I made some epic ones. I’d just rather everything had worked out and we could all be warm and fuzzy.

Someone on here very important to me has shown me the fine line between being vocal and yet being courteous. It can be a challenge to hold back and as many have told me, the first instinct is to make a public assault which is what I hoped to have avoided. Thinking about being on the other side makes it all the more difficult.

Surely I’ve gone on enough. East Coast signing off….

Billy

Hi Sergey - Emailed you again today - still no response. That's eight emails I've sent you (unanswered) since I last heard from you on the 17 of Feb. Please contact me to discuss this lens you sold me.

I am sorry to be doing this but feel I have no choice.

James

Sergey,

As a potential customer I will tell you two things:

Billy's 1st post was fair, and I did not think badly of you from what he posted. Had you got on here and told him you wanted to make things right instead of being defensive, you would have gotten more business. But you didn't. Bad choice.

It's clear from this thread you have inconsistant customer service, and you really don't know the quality of lens you are selling from day to day. I won't make a final judgement here since some seem to like you. I will say this:

If you don't COMPLETELY satisfy those people on this board (James, and Billy to start) then this will most likely be the last dollar you will make through this forum.

I cannot speak for Billy, but I do know James, his history and reputation here far exceeds yours, and if he cannot speak well of your product and service, then I won't go within 3000 miles of you sir.

If I were you, I'd stop traveling, and get all this fixed to the point that these people come on here and say nice things about you AND your lenses. Buy them new ones if you must, but the money you spend on this would be far less than what you will lose when thousands of potential customers read this thread (Which is already searchable on Google in a number of ways)

Until then, I would guess any new business from REDUser could be a thing of the past.

just sayin..

Jay
