  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1) When using FC is it neccesary to convert r3d's to Apple prorez for a project with lots of layers.

2) Can someone give me an idea of what the transcode time would be for an hour's worth of material using an Apple Intel based 8 core machine to apple prorez hd from 4k r3d files
.
3) Does the type of video card make a difference for transcoding?

4) Also is audio embedded into the apple pro rez converted file?

thanks in advance
eric

1) I would recommend it. Doesn't have to be prores, but prores works well.

2) Depends. How high quality do you need it? anything from almost 1:1 with your footage to 40:1 depending on how you process. I recommend doing a low quality fast process then cutting and going back to your selects to do the nice processing. If your going from 4k to 1080 doing a "standard" or 2k debayer will look 95% as good as a "full" debayer. the difference in time is HUGE though.

3) only if your using Scratch or Redcine

4) Can be if you use Redalert. Redcine can do it but it's VERY screwed up at this point and adds a weird clicking to the audio. I just load the rendered clips and the proxies into FC then link the audio from the proxies to the Rendered moovs then export them together.

I've had no audio problems with Red Rushes.

Another way to get your audio, is drop all your proxies into compressor, and render out audio only.. comes in handy from time to time.

pro rez or not to pro rez

pro rez or not to pro rez

mike

you said it doesn't have to be pro rez.... what else would work for a multi layer job?

If it is some other codec what would the process times be? i assume faster

Well really any quicktime codec will "work" it's just some will be better than others.

NO the codec of choice won't really effect the transcode time all that much. It might change it slightly depending on your hard drives, but only slightly.

hey sam,

i have read the white paper for FC....unfortunately it really does not suggest what is the ultimate settings with a 8 core machine to work with the media.
It seems one has to develop your own workflow settings. I am typically hearing 3 to 1 as a ratio for converting r3d's to apple pro rez. We have a project that has a lot of layers with audio.
we are using a 8 core pc with redcine and i am getting 3 to 1 ratio with that. We could move the project to Avid (layer freindly) but audio is an issue because that has to be post synced. That sucks....

I guess I am looking for optimal settings for a FC workflow that has
multiple layers with audio.

We can convert the r3d's selects from the FC edl in post and proceed to
finish in 2k with davinci resolve.

One thing to look out for is if you plan to use multi-clip for multi-cam editing.

Works great, especially with ProRes, but there is a horrible bug that prevents it from making a proper EDL or sending to Color.

It means if you go down this path, you have committed to QuickTime and cannot easily return to the R3Ds.

Not a big problem, I use it this way all the time, but it does mean you need to output your footage in a way you are happy with, utilizing as much color correction as you can since ProRes won't bend that far.

hey jim

are you saying that if we edit with the prorez files on different layers
our edl will be unusable for going back to the r3d's?

that's not good....please tell me this is not true....

Hey Eric,

Different layers should be fine, I'm talking about Multi-Clip editing, where you line up a bunch of cameras and see them all in a single window, doing a live cut while you play back.

If you are editing manually you should be fine, though you may find you need to collapse it down to two tracks for best results.
