  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Please! Red London should do repairs!

Fedex isn't too bad. Form a repair job they delivered my camera without customs allowance by mistake, then they wanted the camera back. The Red was unboxed already... They gave up, I went to my local custom, the camera met a nice customs-lady and off I went.

But you never know what will happen on the finacial side - customs mills grind slowly and merciless.

We just receive the first camera back from Upgrade/repair from RED HQ. The biggest problem was to pass into US as a temporary importation, means 4 days in Menphis customs, the return was fine in 6 days (w/weekend & custom clearence) and RED did everything also in 6 days, so it was 2 weeks and 3 weekends (shipped on friday, received on tuesday)
I thinks that the biggest problem from EU is customs, FedEx don't manage temporary exportation but accept the an other agent do it (ours costs 90€ for paper work) and I think is the best solution.
Obliuvsly it will be better to send cameras just to London but I was really scared and finally is not a so big issue, I prefer to manage my own customs than go to a Sony or Panasonic reseller and wait 2 mounth for that screw that come from Japan and no one is taking care of clearence!!!!
Our second camera is going to London next week.. we'll see for how long...
As italian the only thing to say with customs is "BUONA FORTUNA!" (good luck!)

I am sure this rubbish is intentionally made incomprehensible. I am usually not afraid of complicated matters but - for example - the "leaflet" for simply getting a customs number has a 9 page index. Thats 3 pages longer than Final Cut Pro´s 1st manual.

Tax, VAT and Fedex can all be solved. What can't be solved is if your camera goes missing - Red don't insure it in transit and I can't - My own insurance covers EU but I can't find an insurance company to even quote me for shipping the camera to USA.
 
I believe repairs and sales of accessories will be available from Red Europe once the upgrades are all complete - Seem to remember talking to someone there about it. Obviously it doesn't help people at the moment for those in need.

I would love Red London to be able to do this, but the guys at RED LA were amazing when i had a problem with my cam and it was back in my hands in about 10 days around trip. Thanks guys for that.

Fedex on the other hand . . . well i've had nothing but problems with Fedex, they cocked up on so many shipments now and caused me so much hassle. I asked them what forms i needed before hand and they sent them to me thats fine, filled the rather confusing forms out and put them in the shipment, outbound was fine, inbound was a nightmare - i had given them all the info that i had already paid VAT, and i had to go through it all over again several times to multiple people eventually they cleared the camera and i got it back . . . but . . . . .

They were charging me £30 warranty and return fee, not an admin charge or custom charge, just a fee, no explanation of what it was or anything. I complained strongly and they gave me a "credit" for the amount and another when they calculated the tax wrong completely, and wanted me to pay the extra for their mistake. Every shipment has had problems of some sort, and they have flatly lied to me on several occasions - just crazy. I had to complain, complain, complain to them you will get something in the end.

Pinewood is about 40 min away from me i can get there in no time lol if anything does go wrong in the furture :)

RED Europe is alive and well and living in a nice new office on the lot of Pinewood Studios. Our main objective is to carry out the RED One upgrade for those owners who are directed to us by the folk in the Bomb Squad - not surprisingly most of those sent to us are Europe based!
The guys and girls in Lake Forest are also working hard to get us geared up to be a full repair and sales operation, and we think it won't be long - the camo's up....
As to the shipping woes, I feel your pain, but there is a way to avoid hold ups and unnecessary duty costs. If you're shipping back to the US, you must register the temporary 'export' before shipping, and then register the re 'import' when it comes back in order to balance the transaction. FedEx should be able to help you with this. Non EEC dwellers who ship to Pinewood should do the same.
Must get back to camo fixing....:ninja:

alan i did exactly that...
but i do have problems with the reimport until now...fed ex does make mistakes and communication is difficult with them here in germany....combine this with the lovely and very intelligent custom guys and you can feel the pain....its not reds fault that incompetant people are hired by fed ex and the govermant :)
