Hey guys,

I'm looking into purchasing a RED and one of the obvious benefits of owning one is that everyone wants to shoot on it but not everyone will buy one. So they rent.

I was curious to see if you guys were having a lot of success renting the camera out as a single owner, not as a company. Has it died off a little because of the economy? Or are you still seeing people wanting it?

Another question is how do you handle insurance on it? Do you require whoever is renting it cover it? Otherwise, is it covered under your homeowners insurance?

Thoughts on renting out your RED?

Thanks,
Josh

oooo... days of being a single owner and renting to pay for the camera are long gone:(

if you Do not already have a large client base, your rentals will be slim to none... the market is flooded with cameras.

also... to be competitive at all.. You will need to spend at least 30-60,000 min in camera aks and lenses

insurance isnt bad.. you will have to insure your camera equipment (not part of homeowners)
my package is only 1100/year.

but bottom line.. dont buy the camera if your planning on paying it off with rentals.

You can make money if you rent your private Red gear. Don't expect to be refunded for all your gear in a 1-month rental, that's all.

I'm working as a production manager on several projects, I'm used to deal with Red owners' rentals and prices are very different. It depends on the way you see things. Is it better to keep your Red gear in a box collecting dust because you don't want to lower your price or, afterall, it's still better to get some cash, even less than desired ? Nobody else than you and your client know your quotes.

When the Scarlet system will be out, don't expect to make more money with rentals...

Josh,
as a single owner (now) it´s for sure better not to be depending on renting it out. It can be a side business in the indy market. The big production companys prefer to get R1 from professional rental companys with their ability to give full service, replacement in case of failure. Plus they offer all the other pro gear, from lenses (Cooke, Zeiss, Angenieux, Hawk) to Arri FF, lights and so on...
Cheers,
Marc
