  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

building vista64/adobe machine

I just built a vista64/I7 machine using the 920 and the Asus P6T6 revolution board with 12gb Corsair ram (all from NewEgg). Haven't had any issues yet with either Redcine or editing with Premiere CS4. Actually, it has exceeded my expectations so far.

Can't wait for dual I7!

I'd like to mention to anyone who might be moving to Vista 64 with this type of setup: I turned OFF all the Vista visual bells and whistles thinking this would help and my system actually performed WORSE than with them ON. I have no clue why that is, but there you go. YMMV.

thanks Brian. do you think the older GTX 8800 series would work just as well? or does the newer GTX 200 series (280) work much faster? your Corsair RAM is the 4 3gbs? or six 2gb?

are you running vista ultimate 64 or business? or premium?

Hi Kaz, thanks for posting your computer setup, couple questions.

Did you use any special cooling for the cpu? and any special cooling for the ram, or just stock parts and your away? If stock parts how hot is it running.
Oh and which case you got it in.

I upgraded to the 280 because I figured a newer card would give me less issues with Vista. But as long as the 8800 Nvidia drivers for Vista 64 work as advertised, I don't see why there'd be a problem. I doubt the extra memory will do a ton of good for you unless you game or work with 3D.

My ram is 6 2gb sticks. Running Ultimate.

I'm only doing a slight overclock so no special cooling for either. Every now and then while editing my fans kick into high gear, but still normal.

My case is the Zalman Z-Machine GT-1000 which is built like a tank and HEAVY. Awesome case, but word to the wise: watch the edges on the doors! I severley cut my hands twice while changing out parts because the whole case is thick machined aluminum with SHARP edges. Seriously, I don't know how this company hasn't been inundated with lawsuits.

Hey thank you. so you are editing in Premiere and working with the R3D files in AE? just fine? Have you used Encore to Burn a bluRay from RED content?

again thanks a ton.

PS what drive do you have internal? Seagates? 1TB? any RAID you have set up?

Thanks for the info, very helpful, seems a simple build, I'll give it a shot.

Yeah. Edit in premiere then import into AE for color correction, etc. I haven't used encore & I don't have a Blu-Ray burner yet. What I've been doing is outputting uncompressed 2k and bringing it into Vegas (my preferred audio/video software) for output to a 1080p .mp4. Looks fantastic.

One issue I've run into every now and then in AE is a single random frame of my uncompressed file poping up with a color bar. Pretty annoying. Haven't figured that one out yet.

I have an internal Raid0 made up of 2 1tb seagate drives with a velociraptor as my boot drive. My current feature is being stored on a 1.5tb external drive, then backed up to another. As I edit, I'm moving everything over to the internal raid for better performance (editing at 1k in premiere is do-able with an external usb, but it will hiccup every now and then. Haven't tried an off the shelf eSata.).

This is about as low cost as you're gonna get to successfully edit Red footage. The one thing I'm waiting for, and it's a biggie, is control of metadata in Premiere. Once that happens, we poor indies will truly have something incredible in our grasp.

wow thank you!!!! (weird about the color bar)

ok. headed to the store... newegg.com I think.....

why should I get vista ultimate 64bit and not premium 64bit?
still trying to decide on a case....

With ultimate 64 you get a game called tinker! great game, worth the upgrade! other than that i wouldn't know. :shifty:

Vlite for Vista does wonders!

Vlite for Vista does wonders!

Try out the program for Vista64 called Vlite.

Also I am going to try booting from a 4 disk raid0. For backup I will use Macrium to make an exact image in case of blow out.

Has anyone had any experience or good luck with a particular Raid Card?

To those that have Adobe Premier CS4 already running on Vista 64 did you install the full Vista? In Adobe Master Suite I am having problems only with Adobe crashing on startup. Wondering if I missed a component of Vista when I ran it through Vlite at install.

According to http://blogs.adobe.com/davtechtable/2008/12/native_red_camera_files_cs4.html, you require a minimum of a Quad core running at 3.0GHz which means you'd have to overclock the 920 (apparently no problem with the motherboard you're proposing), and 8GB of RAM. I'm looking at a similar system so I've been looking at the same issues.

Unless I misunderstand, I'm not sure you can legally use an OEM version of Vista in this situation. I think you have to buy the full retail version.

Mike.

the vista I have chosen is not for resale. just for me =)

well the new core i7 is actually like a an 8 core, because it is a quad running with Hyper threading... so it appears as an 8 core

I wondered about the hyperthreading thing. Let us know how it works out if you go ahead with it. Heck, the worst that can happen is that you end up having to overclock the 920 slightly to 3GHz. No big deal apparently. Others have achieved 4GHz with that chip with adequate heatsinking. The 8GB of RAM might be the only thing you'd end up spending extra on - and maybe a striped RAID if the harddrive isn't up to the task. So I'm curious to hear how you get on.
