  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Okay here is info I received from IBE..but please keep in mind that this is all preliminary..things subject to change.. I asked for clarification regarding the "without gears" thing. Will post response once I get an answer on that. Also unclear is the whole for mirror and non-mirror lenses..does red work with all the lenses? i will get confirmation on that.

"Our planning is...
New set of primes 10 -14 - 18 - 24 mm for mirror cams (ARRI D21, RED for example) The 14 mm lens is the first - It will be available in June 2009.

Actually we do have...
Set of 25 - 35 - 50 - 75 - 95 mm lenses with PL-Mount for non mirror Cameras as RED ONE.
These lenses are without gear, the price will be less than 4.000,00 EUR.
At the moment we are testing those lenses with a RED Cam and will keep you informed about the results!"

So..approximately we are looking at around 5 grandish per lens.

That's good - it will fill in the gap in the Red Primes set. Mirror and non mirror refers to the amount the lens protrudes into the lens mount. Everything should work on Red.

Must be their machine vision lenses... Design priorities seem to have been on being image side telecentric, ( basically parallel light beams on the sensor side ) might make them image strangely for cinema use, might not. Should not breathe much at least !

Companies seem to be not getting the idea of how big the market is for reasonable cost Cine Stye lenses that deliver in the next year. May all the spoils will go to the ones who do.

It's been mentioned before in other threads, but... Can someone tell me just why we would want that red shroud / protector / whatever that covers up a significant portion of the gear rings? I don't care about it being red, but what if I want to top-mount a notor?

I know this is just a render, all things can change. I'm interested to see how these lenses perform. How they will compare to the RED primes and Ultras.

Well the first post says without gear, and there were pictures up earlier this morning of red barreled, non geared, pl mounted lenses. Photographs not renders. Don't know where they went.....?

eeeewww... Not sure I like the telescoping element shown in that pic, assuming that's what it is. That's what it looks like, but it's really long.

Made for machine vision applications... the wide ones ( such as the 14mm shown in the render ) are made for cine use. I'd expect them to be more to our collective liking.

These are IBE-Optic Low Shading Fast Lenses

"Low Shading Fast Lenses for sensors
Ø 28 mm
These are low vignetting, image sided telecentric lens systems, designed specifically to meet the needs of big sensors up to Ø 28 mm.
Low Shading Fast lenses offer cutting edge mechanical and optical design with instant production value. LSF lenses provide engineers a high resolution lens with options never before available for big sensors.
- Specifically designed for Ø 28 mm sensors using
micro lens arrays
- Fast 1.8 f-stop
- Image sided telecentricity
- included iris and focus function
- F-Mount
- PL-Mount or any other

The... lenses all are available as base lenses. We can supply them with any lens adaption you need (e.g. F Mount, M58, ...).These lenses have fix iris (1.8,2.1,2.4,2.8) and fix focus.
This solution is a best price solution, without expensive mechanical features, that may even have disadvantages in many machine vision applications."

There are all sorts of optics and designs available from IB/E. Some of which are not on their website.

Some of this information is incorrect and some of it is not ready to be up on a public forum as it may change. Some of these optical devices pictured are not the ones that were the topic of discussion with the designer from IB/E, who by the way really regrets having started something here that he didn't mean to by answering a few questions.

Please understand that all things are in flux as development proceeds. And what may be the picture of a prototype may look nothing like what is delivered in the end. Anyone recall RED's first stab at primes? They were essentially abandoned for the next design phase. Patience all. Not trying to stifle or keep secrets; just don't want anyone going down a misguided path.

These are not the droids you're looking for...

You can go.

These are not the droids we are looking for.

renders are nothing more than renders until we see the real thing. preliminary information is just that. I think we are all familiar with the "everything is subject to change." however, I think any information even though preliminary is better than no information. I can understand withholding spec information. I can understand withholding price info ..but it is interesting seeing companies wanting to keep so HUSH HUSH about their identities. I guess they want to do a surprise ambush to other lensmakers..BAM.. prime sets. ta da!

It's actually about not getting people's hopes up with something that may not work out. Sorta casts a shadow over what is actually offered in the end.

You may think everyone understands preliminary info, but then you don't sit at the end of the phone I do receiving calls from people who really don't get it about a host of products. The semi-open development process of RED is an interesting and inspired thing, but I think they made some mistakes in the past with being too forthcoming and in fact they have changed the habit a bit.

Better to be pleasantly surprised that slowly, agonizingly disappointed.

Well said Mitch. I've learned a great deal from being a member of this site (and a few others). Aside from having my questions answered, interest peaked and creatively inspired, I've had a first-hand glimpse at "open development" of product. The challenge as I see it is that the door one opens to let in the innovators, talented end-users, and the marketplace in general is the very same door that lets in the pessimists, delusional and muck rackers. There needs to be some kind of filter but I just know what that filter will look like. Again, thanks for your continued insights into the sales/rental end of our industry.

Best Regards,

Nick.
