Is there a way for me to batch import just R3Ds from folders of copied mags, other than using Spotlight to find all R3D files in the parent folder?

Using the Media Browser gives me the proxy MOVs as well, which is evil, as you know.

Er...

In Premiere, I just create a bin for my R3Ds then import to that bin. I choose my folder where my footage resides, typically a parent folder that has folders containing copies of all my RED mags. In the search field type 001.r3d, sometimes I have to click on the name of my parent folder again on the top frame of the window on the location markers. Then I just select them all and click import.

On Windows, essentially the same thing, but mask with *001.r3d

You don't need to worry about importing additional r3d segments; 002, 003, etc..

On OSX you can create "smart folder" pointers that can direct you to a specific location and filter filenames just by selecting the smart folder in the location tab.

That's about as easy as it's going to get... Or are you looking for something else?

Is that search field inside the Media Browser? I spent literally two minutes playing with CS4 before leaving the office today, so if that's my answer, great!

Otherwise I'm more than happy to use Smart Folders or Spotlight, I was just hoping Adobe hadn't overlooked something so crucial.
