Hi everyone

First time poster, long time lurker (and a very grateful one at that).
Not sure if I should have posted this in the Avid forum so apologies if that's the case.

I've just finished the offline on a short drama, shot @ 4k 16:9 on a Red One (build 16).
Edited on FCP with ProRes HQ files made by dropping the _M proxies into Compressor. I didn't have the storage for L&T 2k QTs nor found the speed of cutting with proxies directly satisfactory...

So now the producer's arranging the online/grade and it's looking likely we'll be posting at a facility house with Avid DS (or possibly Symphony Nitris). As such, I need to get the sequence from ProRes HQ 576x1024 to *something that Avid accepts* 1080x1920.

The sequence is only short (~7 1/5 mins) and consists of straight cuts and one dissolve.

So this is what I'm thinking for the conform:

1) Export an XML from FCP of the locked offline
2) Use Clipfinder to run a conform on the XML, rendering DNxHD QTs in the process.
3) In FCP, import the conformed XML from Clipfinder thereby creating a DNxHD sequence .
4) Export an EDL (3600CMX) from FCP from this new sequence.

Then taking EDL/DNxHD directory over to avid...

5) Import EDL
6) Batch import offline media - DNxHD QTs.
7) Finish the film!

Do people think this will work? This is my first RED project and I have to say, the difficulty with running conforms on sequences is a bit of a pain. Having to use Monkey/Crimson etc. etc. when the original R3D media is right in front of you and the offline files carry Reel # and TC is rather annoying to say the least.

As always I'm sure there are plenty of alternatives and I am all ears! Perhaps conforming via L&T to Redcode 2k QTs, rendering out a DNxHD or uncompressed 10 bit QT and importing EDL in Avid as cut list will work too?

Anyways, I'll be very grateful for all and any help offered.

PS I'm running late '08 MBP 2.8GHz, FCP 6.0.5, OS X 10.5.5, QT 7.5.5

If anyone is interested what I ended up doing was:

i) The clipfinder workflow for wrapped R3D 2k QTs in FCP
ii) In FCP media manage the sequence to create a new Avid DNxHD 185x project.
iii) Export an EDL from FCP, import into Avid
iv) Batch Import the DNx QTs into Avid

Seems to work fine.

PS originally I wanted to use the clipfinder - Quick Render function to create the DNxHD clips, but for whatever reason I can never get the rendering to start! So a bit roundabout, the above way, but seems to work fine.

If you cannot get a render started in Clipfinder, it is usually because no render preset exists. Try creating a render preset (press plus sign button) before you start to render.
If this does not help, let me know, so we can get to the bottom of the problem.

Cheers,
Hans
