  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

Who needs another DeLorean??? :)

So long as Jim keeps his business out of other people's noses:innocent:

I agree, the ultimate long term survival of Red as a company is more important than new gear a month or two earlier. And, as Jim says, there is always the option of an R1 if that big gig lands, a working deposit on an Epic.

Thanks, as usual, for the straight shooting Jim.

What does this mean?

I means we wait. Nothing else. I cannot imagine any other company giving us an update like this. Keep it coming Red. We'll be here.

Fair enough with the delay. That was expectable. How about more specific prices though? I'm dying to know how much I will have to spend for a working S35 all-in-all.

For me this is FANTASTIC NEWS. Personally I have never expected to see the Epic-X until sometime mid-late 2010. Also here in MO the RED One is JUST STARTING to get real traction. The last thing I need right now is to throw another camera at them.. These people don't ride like that.

Also a lot of AMAZING products are just getting released, and I'm excitinig to get to using them.

The Economy sucks, this is very true. And I cannot say what will happen 6 months from now. But I can tell you that I believe the old days of taking years to reverse this downturn have changed.

I think people are waiting for an excuse, something to allow them to feel safe enough to get back in the game. A lot of this (Not all of it) is being caused by fear. I think we will see improvements around August..

I hope I'm right!

Jay

But unfortunatelly for me, Red One is way out of my price range....I'm just an indie filmmaker in a part of the world with many stories to tell, but seriously needing the Red Revolution to make filmmaking viable, presentable and doable.....I want to be free to race anyone in wethever circuit I'm challenged- I want it to be about skill, not the car...

Compared to five years ago, you are already free. You don't need the red revolution to develop narrative and visual skills, which are the only set that will allow you to 'race with the big boys' (don't quite get your analogy but i'll drive with it) Keep shooting with your hvx and push that thing to the limit!

This may be silly but I wonder if RED has considered a third option. A sort of RED 1.5 where the design is basically the same as the RED ONE but the processors are more powerful, the weight is lighter, the inputs are slightly different (regular XLR's maybe), and the sensor is upgraded.

This would take less R and D, would allow RED to advance more quickly, and would give us all something to gawk over in the meantime ... also, it's what new RED ONE buyers could buy for now.

Maybe it doesn't make sense, but as a pragmatist and a business owner myself, I always like to look at my options, so I'm humbly floating this one - I know how eager RED is to continue to advance the marketplace ... and how thankful I am for it.

This is news is totally fine. I am now hoping for a FULL release (with some inventory for sale pretty much on the spot) for NAB 2010. That would be awesome Jim. If you guys worked away, perfected your magic on the new systems, and released with a supersonic bang at NAB 2010. Although this turmoil will not be over by then, it is about the time we should start seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I would love that timing.

Bottom line. Just keep doing what you do. Make the decisions you need to make. I couldn't have more faith in the RED future.....

Ditto.

If the improvements come at a rate of 50% of what we have experienced we'd still be way ahead of the game.

not sure what to make of Jim's Comments
wise?
brave?
frustrating?

probably wise not to ignore the current economic climate - which I really hope does not linger too much longer

hmmm

Jim,

If I may ask, there's a LOT of talk about your Prime Set now that some have seen..

Do you have a rough schedule on these? Or are suppliers in this area also slowing things down.

Jay

I wonder how people waiting on Red's upcoming cameras before making a purchase affects that 40%-50% dip in camera sales?

We're all behind you, it's in everyone's best interest for RED to thrive at any cost, especially those of us who've bought into the system already. How scary would it be if we saw RED completely rolling the dice at this point, a company that didn't survive this downturn certainly wouldn't be providing software and support for years to come!

For now, we're all loving our RED's.

This all makes perfect business sense. I classed my job as 100% safe last month, now, i've just been informed that i've survived the axe....for now :-(

Don't push yourselves too hard (less mistakes happen that way too) and Jim have a long weekend, but before you go, tease us with a new picture of the Scarlet please!!!!!

Si

Does any of this mean that production of the 2/3 Scarlet fixed lens camera will be pushed forward?

That would perfectly make sense, as it's the lowest cost model and may sell good even if there is not that much money going around these days. And it may be the Perfect B-Cam for the later bought "better" Cams

on the bright side I guess it means we can go back to buying (or just thinking of buying) red specific 3rd party AKS w/out them being obsolete in 6 months. also (small) good news for aks suppliers in a sea of gloom.
also some of us will get work (docs and commercials) specifically because of the downturn. I call it the "Now More Than Ever" effect.

My take on this

My take on this

My first post here and I know I'm gonna get ripped a new one but I had to post. I'm a firm believer in new technology and I also commend Red for what they've developed in the Red One. We don't own one currently but have rented them out before and feel they are a solid platform that is in need of substantial refinement (I think we can all agree on that). With the specs Red had released on the new Scarlet and Epic platforms, who wouldn't line up to purchase over the R1? But, if you look back just over a month ago on this board, they showed a development picture of "Frankie" in the "5k is alive" post. How can you go from such a raw untested prototype to market in under 6 months? In my opinion, you can't. Point being, slow down and give realistic specs and delivery dates that you can keep or you might loose face with many potential buyers. (and yes, I know they say the specs are always going to change, count on it). But that's just my 2 cents and my first post.
