Please change the Formatting Drive screen!!

It is very painful when an operator has to sit for 90 seconds and cannot be adjusting the frame or making critical decisions, The Formatting should not be FULL SCREEN!! It should cover the Menu items and system diagnostics.

I thank you very much for changing the output over HD-SDI, most of the crew can continue to work.

What would be awesome? A menu option to change it, so the people who love the formatting screen can keep seeing it everyday!

I agree. Anything that stops people from seeing 'through' the camera is a bad idea. On a commercial shoot, there is very rarely a time on set where there isn't somebody who needs to see the monitor.

Exactly.

I just came on to request the exact same thing.

Just move the drive formating text and progress bar to cover the lower section of the HUD. We can still see the image but a clear indication of the cameras state is displayed.

I really hope it gets changed, I refuse to let the Crew wait on Camera Dept.

As an addition, can we replace the word RAW in the lower left of the display with what color space you are in. ie RAW / 709 / RED

This is a good idea! Another request would be to make a preset in the menus so the meters, histogram, and zebras could be based on RAW even when viewing in REDSpace.

The Color Space idea is awesome, Saying Raw all the time isnt very helpful...

Slightly confusing as that whole zone relates to your precise recording settings (as opposed to varispeed framerate, in particular) - don't want anyone thinking I'm recording in 709...

The next version of R3D Data Manager for Mac (v 4.4) will allow you to format cards OFF CAMERA, at the DIT station. So you can pre-format mags and have them ready for instant changing.

Its been confirmed to work in camera builds 16 through 18. I dont seem to have access to cameras with previous builds, so its untested in builds before that.

As a side benefit, because its not on the camera the formats are typically faster. It takes about 21 seconds on my test box to format a 320Gb Red Drive, as opposed to nearly a minute on camera.

And yes, it is a low-level format, not just a "dump into the trash", so there are no issues with old files hanging around causing data "voids".

In addition, it offers a secure format, which takes a ton of time but basically writes zeros across the entire drive. So when you are returning the rental camera, they wont steal your footage.

One last feature - it will ONLY format Red Media - so there is NO possibility of erasing your destination drives.

This is neither recommended or supported.
ALWAYS format media on the camera.

Having written the code and evaluated the resulting format and compared them to Red's own camera formatting (on a byte level) and in addition having tested the formatting and confirming that build versions 16 to 18 do recognize the formatted media, I would wonder what the difference is.

I would agree that general formatting off camera will not work. And future versions of Red builds may introduce new features, but for build 16 to 18, I see no difference between what my software does and what the Red camera does.

And Ill offer my software for you to review Deanan, since you havent seen any version of it yet.

I suppose thats fair.
In my experience, I am there for a lot of DP's first RED go, they always assume that the word RAW is the viewing space already. Since the camera doesn't record in any other mode I find it only one sentence or two to confirm. RAW is a fixed property, everything else in said box is a variable. However, it's a somewhat valid point. The viewing space could be listed elsewhere in the HUD. The point being many people would like to be able to know what color space they are looking at with out going into the menus.

As far as Conrad and Deanan's discussion.

I am not going to lie, I want what Conrad is selling. However Deanan is one of the authorities on such matters. I believe he has very good reasons for saying it is less reliable.

I've found it hard to pre-format the drives before use, a lot of 1st's wont trust anything but the camera

We've tested formating off camera before and have seen enough problems in testing and also with users doing the same. On our side both engineering and support are using both intimate system understanding to rule out off camera formatting as an option. There is known risk there and it's not worth it. I'd imagine you also wouldn't want customers to blame for recording problems.

We tried to do this originally also but it turned out to be a dangerous idea.

While we're on the subject of feature requests...

how about fixing the Frame Guide for 16:9 to be true when shooting 4K 16:9 (it still uses the top and bottom from the 2:1 aspect)

Users previously formatting off camera may have been formatting using a incorrect method or settings, so any support issues raised by them would be their own fault.

Beyond the known issue of recording media to the wrong drive (which isnt an issue really, the data is still there and playable) I dont see a difference, on a byte level, between the Red one formatting and the formatting done by the tool. If you would like to explain your issues during your testing, you can contact me offlist. conrad at r3ddata.com.

As I said before Id offer my software for your review.

Just set it to FULL and it will be the full 16:9 in 16:9
