Hi there all

I just wanted to send out a message to those who may have taken the fxphd class Intro to RED... I am shooting and editing my first independent film and I have been asked to learn everything about the RED from shooting to post.... After taking Intro to RED, were you satisfied? I didn't see any other classes following this one...

Any insight would be so greatly appreciated, thanks very much!

There's a lot of great info there to get yourself going,....but, uh.....

....... and I have been asked to learn everything about the RED from shooting to post....

good luck with that. :)

Learning RED from shooting to Post is quite a task, but you're in the right place to start. Unfortunately, some of the more basic questions and answers are buried down in the form and the search is not that great, but there's a ton of good info here.

Taking a class might be a good start, as would reading the entire manual, keeping up with the forums daily, and getting your hands on a camera or into a rental house where they deal with them.

Birns is having a free seminar on practical experience from shooting RED on FEB. 25th, if you're in the LA area.

I've taken every fxPHD class on RED that I can - they were the only thing that kept me from going insane while I waited for my RED.

If you give me the exact class number you are looking at (101 or 203 this term) I can give you a full review. PM me and I'll be happy to fill you in on the details.

thanks so much!

thanks so much!

thanks very much for the feedback! I am looking into intro to RED 203 definitely in the 200 series... I understand that all of the information is shooting pretty high, I'd just like to make sure I'm starting in the right place... :)

Reading this forum a little every day will help you develop your knowledge. But nothing beats actually shooting and playing with the footage. That's what you need to focus on first.

I took the "RED One - On Set Day & Night" course from FxPhD while waiting for my Red and that class alone was worth the enrollment fee. What a great course!

Great courses, and there is something about seeing guys go out on set, using the gear, explaining it while they use the various tools, etc. It's well worth the money. The next best thing is to get yourself a camera, learn the manual forwards and backwards, shoot LOTS of tests, spend LOTS of time in the edit/grading suite, and oh yeah, the big one - make sure you know a thing or two about lighting.

Thanks so much to red@birnsandsawyer! Do you think the seminar would certainly be worth a trip out to L.A.? I am on the east coast...

Not sure I would head out from the East Cost since it's only going to be a few hours for the seminar, but if you were in the area it would definately be worth it.

I also took every RED class available from FXPHD and it was a great treat... learned a lot about the ins and outs of shooting and postproduction on RED aswell as background info about digital imaging systems... lots of interesting information about third party software and little tips and tricks that are hard to find anywhere else... go for it, it´s worth the money...

nobody outside of RED teaches the hardware, workflow, or concepts of the red camera system better than the FXPHD guys.

I e-mailed Mike Seymore from Canada and had a few questions about the classes a few months ago about all of his red classes. He called me back in Canada 10 minutes after I sent the e-mail. We talked RED! for about 25 minutes and being a techy person myself he was talking about stuff that went over my head.

These guys are pros, and how they have set up their class structure and learning material it is one of the best online training schools around. Money well spent, not only on red classes but the shake ones are good too.
