Hello everybody

Finally I have received all my filters and my Micro matte box. After looking through the forum and asking advice i bought a kit of filters. Well not very happy because i encountered some problems. I asked someone to buy the filters for me in US since I live in Albania, so the guy bought the filters at Filmtools in CA, and he brought me the matte box that was delivered in his house and the filters.

First of all, one of the filters, Formatt HD ND IRND 0.9 was scratched. Well, since my friend who transported the filters wanted to save space he took off the paper boxes and he brought them in their filter pouches. The filter inside was wrapped with a paper and scotched, it was never opened, but still inside the filter was scratched. Without the boxes and with the time that it took for me to receive the filters (about 2 weeks and a half) i don't think i can take them back to Filmtools for an exchange.

But the biggest problem was with the Vertical ND Soft Grad that i bought. Only now I realized that the Redrock matte box cannot use 4 x 5.6 Vertical Gradient because there is no way to move them up and down. The trays of the matte box can only go up and down vertically, but with a vertical gradient you have to rotate the tray 90 degrees first and move it up and down to select the proper position of the gradient. But this cannot be done with the RR matte box. I got the vertical gradients because i have been reading here in the forum that with a vertical ND gradient you have more possibility to move it up and down and to get the desired position of the gradient.

Guess what happens when you have no experience. This is my first filter buy and i found myself with three filters that i cannot return.

I don't know if maybe Redrock can make me a special tray that can use vertical 4 x 5.6 filters in the matte box. I hope Brian gives me an idea, or if anybody knows how this issue can be fixed please advise :help:

Thanx

You may be able to use an arri vertical tray. perhaps Mitch or Film tools can advise. id like to know too as I also have some vertical grads.

yes but once the tray rotates it has no ability to move up and down. The tray is now sliding in from the slide so you can only shift the tray left to right. That is his issue.

He needs to get a vertical tray. As far as the scratched one goes.... sorry.

You are right.. my bad

About the scratch, it seems it was scratched before anyone even looked at it. Removing the box for transport should not constitute as your fault that the filter was scratched before use... not unless your friend shoved in a little grain of sand or something wird like that... it sounds like you might deserve a replacement.

Does anybody know if the Arri vertical tray will fit into the RR matte box?

I will try to replace the scratched one and see if its possible.

I love this forum, every time I think I made a big mistake seems like there is always a solution.

Thanx for the input.

This is quite a fundamental problem with the RR mattebox no?
I posted on the RR forum and was advised to wait for their 5.65 x5.65 tray to be released and then buy 5.65 square filters. This isn't a very pleasing solution for anyone with existing PV sized glass

Took the words out of my mouth Pete. I too am waiting for the RR 5.65 square trays before buying grads or polas. Is there any word from RR about the release date on these?

Arri 5.65 square trays work fine...

I have an arri tray which I use for 5.65 square grads, works great if a bit spendy.

I have two Arri trays that dont fit. A combo tray 5x5 and a 4x5.

Well at least they are going to make them and they will be priced accordingly to the MB. As far as I have read there is no issues with the MB and all it's current functions so if this completes the full spectrum of professional capabilities a MB is supposed to do then it will become even better of a bargain. Am I understanding this correctly?

Okay, I'm not the most experienced guy in the world, but why would he need vertical movement on a vertical grad??? You need vertical movement on a horizontal grad (used horizontally to move the line to block light from the windows, as it were), and horizontal movement on a vertical grad (used horizontally to block the light coming in from a door or window on one side of a shot), but what possible use could you have for vertical movement for a vertical grad (that is, anything that a horizontal grad can't do anyway)?

I'm clueless on this one.

Stephen

Vertical movement on vertical grad to set the grad in line with the horizon when trying to take down the sky.
Maybe what you and I call a vertical grad is different?
Graduated from top to bottom
i.e

Yes exactly, the vertical filters cannot get in the matte box vertically. Doesn't Redrock plan to make vertical trays as well?

The Arri vertical filter seems to fix the issue but I don't know if it fits in this matte box.

Hi there, Pete. . .

We're on the same page. As for me, I wouldn't use the sort of grad you show (what I believe is called a vertical grad) for horizon use. I have a horizontal grad for that. I would, however, use your vertical grad sizeways for "door kill."

Glad I'm not a complete idiot here.

Thanks.

Stephen

Morgan what kind of arri tray are you using? For what kind of arri matte box were they made, so i can get a vertical one and be sure it will fit the redrock?

Stephen maybe i made a mistake on buying these vertical grads but since i am using zeiss zf, theses filters cover the whole lens, and with a vertical tray you have more possibility no setting the desired position of the gradient by moving up and down. Other people are using theses filters vertically also, but i guess not with the Redrock.
