RED has concluded some additional testing on temperature ranges for RED ONE and accessories.

RED ONE, PRO LCD, LCD, and EVF:

Operating range: 0C to +40C (32F to 104F)

Storage range: -20C to +50C (-4F to 122F)

Should you have any performance issues with the above four products within that operating range, please file a support ticket on red.com/support.

I will be adding these ranges to RED.com shortly...

Thanks, BC

Sounds mostly similar to Sony F900 specs, which are:
Operating: 0 °C to +40 °C (+32 °F to +104 °F)
Storage: -20 °C to +60 °C (-4 °F to +140 °F)

While the camera may work outside the official range, that isn't guaranteed in writing (at least none that I've seen online).

It is certainly good to know this Brent.

Could you please explain what "storage temperatures" stand for? As in what is the difference with operating temps besides the obvious... what would happen if they are not adhered to, no boot up? damage? etc...

And is there the possibility for a Red extreme cold weather cover? Or is that too small of a market to put resources onto amidst all the R&D for the new line or cameras, etc?

The posted ranges are technical specifications. The -20f Evin is mentioning was from internal environmental tests that were conducted not to form a spec but for case use studies to identify separate issues.

Of course there will be extreme situations that people are going to expose the camera to, just like every other piece of electronics every made. Sometimes you will get lucky and sometimes you will not if you go outside those boundaries.

Use common sense if you are going north or south of the guidelines, use protection.... USlatin, there is definitely a market for an extreme weather cover, but it wont be made by us (at least not anytime soon).... hopefully someone will look at that as an opportunity :)

So that means if we're shooting below freezing we have no viewing options...does that mean we have to shoot using a film camera with optical viewfinder? What good is it that the camera can go to -20 F if we can't actually use any of the accessories to view anything? Being someone from Canada this is of great concern to me...

jdcineaste... I stress the common sense part of my statement above....

This is pretty normal stuff guys...The Panasonic", Sony, Marshall, and most all of the other broadcast field monitors have an "operating" temperature that starts at Zero degrees C...

Just FYI everyone, myself and another REDUSER are in the final stages of a cold/warm weather wrap that we are going to announce to the reduser community here in the next two weeks. We have been working on this concept for about 3 months now and are almost ready to announce the product. We are finalizing some of the logistics and prototyping as we speak and think many of you will find our solution a nice balance between function in extreme temps and keeping the original design aesthetics in tact.

If anyone is interested in beta testing the new product when its available please send me a PM.
BTW - Sorry for the tease but thought it was appropriate to this thread and Jarred's statement.

well there you go... Thanks mike :)

RED ONE, PRO LCD, LCD, and EVF:

We experienced a heatwave out here a couple weeks back with three days in a row peaking over 44°C ambient - and #242 soldiered on shooting exteriors.

YMMV, of course.

Mike, my man, let me see some pictures of that sexy fashionista couture R1 parka of yours... I have drool icicles already and this is the first time I hear about it.

I wish I had an R1 for this little teaser I am hoping to shoot at the end of the month but we have to shoot it with no money... we have no need for the teaser really, but we want to shoot something while we are up there scouting locations. Hope some R1 owners will raise their hands and go out all dressed up in the new outfits before this winter's over. It is starting to warm up already!

Yeah, Red cameras is the 240's seem to be particularly rugged...a vintage production run.

i was on a job where multiple REDs were left outside in the fairly extreme cold (under 20F) for 5 straight days. every morning we showed up, booted the cameras, and for the most part, they performed flawlessly. I can't really say more about that shoot yet, but it was nutty....

Pictures will come soon as we have the finished prototype in about 2 weeks. It's been a more difficult task than we first thought but it's coming along nicely now and we just need to finalize a few things. Thanks for your interest!

Warranty Issue?

Warranty Issue?

I am in touch with my Bomb Squad rep right now finding out more info about this topic. Jarred you mentioned using common sense, yes, if you take the camera out in the cold and you want it to work you would have too.

What I want to know is if I take it outside in -15 C weather and the camera is wrapped up nice and cozy....BUT something malfunctions:

Is my warranty still good or have I voided it?

Now that's cold. Canada should be paying you live there. Get out of there! :)

I guess when the camera is turned on, the electronics will heat itself pretty good. The most sensitive part for cold is the red-drive. Drives can become totally dead in cold weaher. Always have the drive inside your jacket, and just pull it out on the camera when shooting. A frozen drive is nooooot good. CF cards is better, but they can become slow in really cold temps.

So what is meant for all those that are posting pics and saying, "hey guess what temp I shot at today".

You have probably voided your camera warranty. No you didn't install something you shouldn't have or used a mount that you shouldn't have. You used it below the operating range.

Now if someone from Red is going to respond, I would like you to post something like this, "IF YOU USE THE CAMERA BELOW THIS TEMPERATURE IT WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY AND YOU WON'T BE ON THE LIST TO TRADE IN YOUR CAMERA!".
