Just tried to fit my red handle and can't seem to get the supplied wingnut to tighten. It screws in about half the necessary way, then the wing hits the handle itself and I can't tighten it the required extra few millimeters. The pic on red.com looks like it all works, so I must be doing something wrong? Is there a special nut?

Cheers in advance,

James

Cam- do you mean pull the handle up?

Lewis--well then, I'm in good company!

Pull the wingnut itself (like if you wanted to pull it out without unscrewing it, say like a nail) and you'll get it... There's a spring in it, turn it backwards, let it spring back in, and tighten again repeat operation until it's tight!

It's the same system some tripod have... Yes, ratchet like...

Let us know if you made it :)

Lewis--just the timezone man--I was horizontal.

Thank you all, got it now. That's one of the less "intuitive" Red equipment. But I do feel initiated.

Good to hear yours even go tight enough. I had to take mine to machinist and get the inners shaved and a complete different custom wing nut made. Works bloody great now!

This question has been asked a few times... Maybe the wingnuts should come with an instructional DVD.

"How many Redusers does it take to screw in a ratcheting wingnut?"

Cutting a 4K DPX "how to" now. Should have a graded version by next week (extra delay because I had to put all the clips thru steadicam in FCP--if I had the wingnut and handle working at the start the footage would have been so much smoother).

Hahaha, those goddamned wingnuts are a rite of passage for everyone with a RED. Congratulations!

Here's some helpful documentation for future Redusers...

How can we compete with that!!?? I'm going to hire Hugh Jackman and Baz for my wingnut feature, maybe shoot it in South Georgia or Ayres Rock...or maybe let Hugh run free and take it to Broadway as a musical, yeah. Get a cameo by Julie Andrews, mmmmmmm.
