any thoughts on the ARRI MB 14 and MB 16?

i have been using the MB 14 on production and it seemed quite bulky to me.

does the MB 16 cover 35mm primes and zooms or is it only for 16mm and 2/3" HD?

best wishes,
martin

We use the mb16 a lot on productions. In 4k the widest you can go is 16mm, if you watch carefully for the corners of the frame.

Depending on how big of a lens your looking to use, the Arri MB20 II is a fantastic mattebox as well. It covers the RED 18-85mm lens which is no slouch at 142mm O.D. It's also not to big when using primes- perfect fit in my opinion.

I would assume it would be a little cheaper then the new Arri MB28, but won't know that until it's released.

MB20 II will not work on the biggest of zoom lenses like the Angenieux 24-290mm- but that's what a rental company is for right?

thanks for your replies.

does anybody know about the front diameter of the RED 18-85?

oops, i found the information in the red store - 142mm?

regards,
martin

Red, both Red zooms (18/50mm & 50/150mm) are 142mm diameter.

MB20II is the best for both price and quality. That's what I have.

Excuse me but… 18-50 and 50-150 Red zooms both have a 114mm front diameter, I have no idea where you got this 142mm from.

I just felt the need to clarify this before someone make a bad decision on this wrong information.:nerd:

Does anyone know if the Redrock will work with the 18-85? Does it offer as much range as the MB 20 II in terms of lenses?

Hi, you're right, my bad, it's 114mm, both Red lenses (I re-wrote the same wrong diameter someone gave me for that same question I had months ago... It must have stuck in my head...)

My Arri MB20 doughnut is 114mm and works with both Red lenses perfectly...

The back ring of the MB20-II is 142mm. It fits perfectly on the RED 18-85. The most common rear bellows ring to go into that 142mm ring is the 114mm bellows. The 114mm ring is threaded if one needs to further reduce the ring size to common sizes such as 95mm. The bellows also internally holds a retaining ring to hold a 138mm filter, which is a great place to put a polarizer.
