I know this isn't a new problem and that there are other threads on it, but I can't work out what the problem is. We have 4 hard disks and 3 of them will crash one of our cameras when we try to playback. Batteries are full and it still happens. So it feels like we have one magic hard drive. The other strange things is that our other camera seems happy with all of them. The camera that crashes has recently been updated by RED with the boards, but I think it was doing it before. The information is always on the disk, but it scares the hell out of everyone when it causes the camera to reboot. Any thoughts on what could be the problem?

We are shooting 4KHD, 25FPS, REDCODE36, 4 channel sound.

Same problem on location now in the desert (very cold, on my iPhone), except it's also freezing when we attempt to cut a roll, and leaving us with broken R3Ds and no proxies. Any advice from anyone would be really helpful 805-200-7858. We're shooting on CF now but would prefer the drives.

That's a different problem. Try shooting recode28 to your cards, might help.

Using all 4 channels? That would be the first thing I tested. (So many audio problems.)
Have you tried other drive cables?
All drives/shots contain audio? You just might have to live with it for now...

Could be an audio issue though I know this camera has done it without audio enabled. I haven't tried another drive cable, I'll give it a go as I have brand new one lying around. Everything is there on the disks. The sound man just said that the audio levels dropped 12db after a playback crash. Scary.

playback problems

We shot a helicopter scene in a studio with lots of flashing lights, shadows, co2-smoke, big fans etc. and the camera dropped frames at 50fr/sec. Recorded the scene in 25fr/sec without dropped frames but it was impossible to playback. It crashed all the time and we had a hard time with the director. Back lighted smoke seems to brake the codec. We had several issues in that shoot, high contrast lighting, smoke and strong back lights. Does anyone have experienced the same... No playback possible.

Interesting, we had smoke too...

Ive been having playback problems for a long time, through many builds, different drives/cables and recording formats. The camera went twice to red and came back with the issue unresolved. Im sure its a known issue and that Im not the only one having it and find it quite irritating that I havent received a concrete answer from the technical department. How can you announce new cameras when you havent resolved a fundamental flow in your first one????

I have in camera playback issues with Redcode 36 4K 2:1.
It shows something like "audio playback issue"...

But all the clips play always OK in Red Alert and RedCine.

I've found that when this happens, if you fast forward into the clip a bit, playback then works fine.

Best,
Tim
