  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon EF-S 10-22mm with Birger Mount?

We have one, and I plan to.... once the mount materialises....

Shooter -

Yes you can, and I do. It's crazy wide.

Dude, I'm so happy. I own this lens and use it with my Rebel XTi and love the images. Now I just need the Birger or the Andy. :)

EDIT: Attached are some images I shot recently with the Canon EF-S 10-22 and the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. Can't wait to use it on my Red One! You're right, it is crazy wide.

It's a great lens for the Red camera! We've used ours on several shoots for paying clients and they've been very happy with the results.

It's especially useful for getting a roughly 18mm equivalent FoV at 2K for high speed shots such as those we captured for a train simulator.

Just for kicks, I've included a shot of my EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM mounted on it as well!

Can't wait for the Impero and updated mount to ship.

Here are some example photos taken at 10mm. I really wish that Canon would just make a 10mm EF-S prime at say f2.8 or better, since I rarely use this lens at any other part of its zoom range!

PAUL,

damn. love the samples. I lived in japan for a while and am super envious of living there with a red setup, felt like inspiration was in the air there. I noticed on your site that your getting the electronic follow focus/iris control for the EFS mount. I know there's tons of talk about this but i like to hear from actual people about what they're using. and with the EF-S lens on the red, do you have to set down to 2k because of the croped delivery of the lens??? or is it possible to get the whole 4k with the 10-22

and uh yeah a prime EF-S 10mm would be really nice

on a side note. if you don't mind me asking. how did you come to make your living in japan. I've been interested since i left at how to live there legitimately. I was never more in touch with my creativity then when i lived there and I'm developing a new drive to create a scenario for myself, similar to what you appear to have.

Thank you,

Liquid, it covers the full 4k, but if you want to shoot higher framerates you have to shoot with a smaller portion of the sensor.

1 – 30 fps 4K
1 – 60 fps 3K
1 – 120 fps 2K

It is hard to ignore what the difference would be between 10mm and 11mm when you look at shots like the buildings and that gorgeous first shot. Plus this lens is so sharp... it makes you think that f3.5 isn't so restrictive after all.

Paul, whats the "North Face" RedDrive mount....??... or at least, what was it originally?
It's a water bottle holder I believe! :) Our ghetto shock mount!!

The RedDrive fitted inside perfectly the first time I needed some sort of shock mount in a hurry, and it worked like a charm so I kept using it. Not a single dropped frame from it EVER including trains, rock concerts and many other high vibration scenarios.

:)

Paul,

In one of the boat pictures, it looks like you have some kind of small clip-on sun shade on the lens. What is it, if you don't mind me asking? Looks like it could be a nice solution.

Hi Spencer, not to derail this thread but I was inspired to move here in order to pursue my goal of making science fiction movies, due to the unique mix of technology and old culture that pervades the country. Having Red cameras here just makes it that much more beautiful to shoot! So I started my company here which gave me a proper working visa so I can continue to live here and enjoy the place to its fullest.

Cheers,

Paul

Gaffer's tape! :) I used it to shade the lens from outside sun flaring and hold it in position relative to the window. It's a train btw, not a boat.

I did a quick test yesterday with my EF 100mm f2 lens on the Birger mount to see how it looks.

This was shot wide open with zero lighting other than our office fluoros, at 1/50th shutter speed 23.98fps using Build 17 3.4.1 and processed from R3D to TIFF using RedCine 3.1.8 and then tweaked in Photoshop for colour. Click on the image to download a full size 4K JPG version.

The results speak for themselves. Once the Impero is delivered I think you'll see a true revolution in low budget shooting develop which looks every bit as good as much higher cost cinema lenses for 99% of projects. The 1% that still need the specialised qualities of true cinema optics will continue to use them (and we would too for certain needs) but for the price of the Red 18-85 zoom (which is FANTASTIC btw) one could buy an entire set of fast Canon L primes and have a formidable shooting set. Those economics are not to be ignored in these uncertain times....
