I shot a music video last week and,
1-I tried to export as dnxhd from redcine to desktop. when I tried to open it only 1 frame was exported, and not the footage (but the export took about 25 min for 50 sec). am I doing something wrong?
2- I exported as 1080, 24P, ofcourse I will create 1080 P project in AVID. so my question is, if I export 2K-2:1, can i edit in Avid as 2K? I checked that my AVID doesn't take 2K. Again some tips and guidence is really appreciated.
note that I have installed the qicktime codecs that is suggested by AVID.
plus note that I am not using any XML or ALE.

3-which is btter to edit with AVID software alone or FCP wth Kona LHe?

Thanks

Is your final master a 2K or HD. If HD (and then SD) I would reccomend getting to HD as part of your dailies process which is what you are doing regardless of system used for editing. REDCINE only exports 175x which is great for HD finishing. Are you on a Mac or PC? Is this with the new REDCINE that was released yesterday?

Michael

my master would be SD for now, however I would go HD in the future.
I had the problem with the old Redcine, however I installed the new redcine 3.18 and it worked fine. yes I imported as 175x.
I am using PC MC. 4 core 3.8, 4 GB ram, 4500 Nvidia.
I noticed that when I imported the footage there was slight a squeeze. is that normal or do I have to adjust manually? and i tried different settings
I export 2K 2:1, 2K16x9 & 4K16x9 gave me the same thing, little bit of squeeze, note to mention that the original footage was shot 16x9 Raw.

moreover, I don't know if this is a bug, I tried to export DPX and TIFF, Redcine gave error message. anyone had the same problem?
again all this with the new Redcine.
again note to mention that I have installed every codecs that Avid suggested to us.

Thanks in advance.

2- export 4K 16x9 gave m

When you open the QT movie transcoded out of REDCINE what does the properties say on the file itself? Is it 1920 x 1080? If so, what settings are you using to import into MC? I would suggest importing into an HD project first, then flip to SD and work from there.

Michael

ok, i will check that out and let you know ASAP.
Thanks

Ok, I checked and it says 1920x1080 its DNxHD.
the project setting is 1080 24P.
again I am having this slight squeez (character looks a bit slim) when I import into Avid.
hmmm so what am I doing wrong here?
xport 2K2:1-import=slight squeez
xport 2k 16x9-import=slight squeez
xport4K 2:1-import=slight squeez
note that the display/guide setting is 1:85:1 US 35mm3perf, does this effect?
aspect square is 1:1 and the scale is 1.0000
do I have to change the scale to 1.1000?

your help is appreciated.

Thanks

another question though regarding the size of a file.
is it normal if you output 40sec of footage as DNxHD quicktime the size is about 900 MB?

Thanks

Keghnan

Data rates of DNxHD will differ depending on resolution selected. DNxHD comes in 36, 115, and 175. See:
http://www.avid.com/products/Media-Composer-Software/resources.asp
Click the Avid storage calculator link at the bottom of the page.

What you are seeing is HD square pixels versus SD non square pixels. Make sure you set it up that way when importing or import into an HD project first, then transcode to SD after flipping project to SD.

HI Michael,
ok the import setting under image is
aspect ratio 601/709, Non Square
color levels 601/709
autodetect sequential files is checked, Alpha -use existing

I tried square. no luck, it made worst (anamorphic)

again if I tried both import as mxf411 and 175X and the image is still slightly squeezed.
moreover where I have to go to check or see HD square pixels versus SD non square pixels?

the project is HD108024P.

Thanks in advance

Should be 601/709 non square when importing 1920 x 1080 into an HD project. I am assuming the QuickTimes look correct before importing? Do the QuickTimes have a slight letterbox for the 2:1 material? You can turn off sequential file and alpha seeing as your sources do not have this, but that should not affect anything anyway.

Michael

yes, the quicktimes are same as 2:1, no slight squeez
moreover, no slight letterbox in the quicktime.
however when I tried to import meterial into Avid yesterday, it had slight letterbox which it didn't have before and again slighly squeezed.
maybe I am doing something wrong. donno.
any advice?

Thanks in advance

If you are shooting 2:1 and you preserve width there has to be a slight letterbox when contained within a 16:9 aspect ratio (1.78:1). When you had the slight letterbox in Media Composer you found that things were still slightly squeezed?

Michael

yes.
but we shot 16x9 aspect ratio (well that is what the cinematogropher told me).
so to conclude, we shot 16x9, 4Kraw. export 2:1 from redcine, import intoAvid.
we see slight squeez and slight letterbox.
I treid importing some other clips and I don't see slight letterbox, only squeez.
well in both cases the squeez is there.
so is this some kind of bug or am I doing something wrong.
Thanks in advance
Keghnan

Hard for me to tell what you are doing since this is the first time I have heard of this type of issue. But you are expoerting 2:1 from REDCINE - are you referrng to aspect ratio?
