Hi !
Some peoples ask me what a difference between Zeiss Superspeed MKII and MKIII - NOTHING difference , only in exterior design of barrels .
I send you a link :
http://www.cinematechnic.com/resources/zeiss_super_speed_f1,2_lenses.html

You can find in this article that :
==========================
Other than the gear on the iris and the new focus scale ring, and a different helix thread pitch, the Mk. III are identical optically and mechanically to the Mk. II. This is the case for both S16mm and S35mm versions.
===========================
So the difference only in design of exterior barrels .

Best regards

Sergey

$19-20 is about right for Opton (East German) Super Speeds in this condition.
There is no discernible difference between Optons and West German super speeds.
But they have always been valued less for some reason.

Thanks for the answer Evin. What other factors make Master Primes worth so much more (orders of magnitude) than lenses like these if both the same speed?

Optic quality. The Master primes are hands down the most corrected, sharpest optics made for cinematography. They don't have CA they're as sharp and crispy at T1.3 as at T4 and they don't breath. All that engineering takes massive amounts of R&D and Ziess/Arri know they're not going to sell too many sets. Not to mention they're all hand made. Super speeds are not that sharp unless you stop down to T2.8 or so. If sharpness is your thing get standard speeds.

IMHO digital cinema is to sharp already and the characteristics you get from having super speeds opened up is a blessing.

If I was in need of getting lenses I would be very interested in this set. I also know Sergey is very reliable I've dealt with him many times in the past.

I still say that you should count on that you want to service your lenses a second time no matter what. Send them to someone in the US - Duclos or similar. No matter what it will be a steal.

The only difference between these and the West German is that they were labeled differently for legal reasons when they were to be sold in East Germany (they were slightly cheaper on that side).

Sergey,

Thank you for linking to my site, rather that just copying the text. I would prefer that my website be identified as the link in the text of the post.

I will say that you have a bit of a contradiction. You can't have a mechanical difference in design and be identical mechanically.

It would be correct to say that the mechanical differences between the Mk.II and Mk.III will not affect the optical performance. Also later model Mk.II's have the 350º rotation focus helix. I know, I owned a set. The Mk.III's do have a larger focus scale. On the S16mm versions, there is a brass ring under the focus scale, between the scale and the middle focus threaded ring.

Good luck with your sale. Your price is reasonable. The buyer will have to find a Distagon 18mm T1.3 Mk.II for sale as a single lens. Regrettably, it is nearly impossible to find one for sale as a single lens.

An 18mm T1.4 Mk.I would be a decent match, as they are identical optically except for the design of the iris (both are f1.2). I have always thought that the T1.4 rating was conservative on the 18, 25 and 35 Mk.I (probably really T1.3) and optimistic on the 50mm and 85 mm (the 85mm might be T1.5).

However, with a digital cine camera, these small differences in T-stop are insignificant, since the camera can easily compensate the tiny difference in exposure. What's important is that the depth of field is the same.

Unless they are misrepresented and in need of $1000's of dollars in repairs :ranting2:

And thank you for the near perfect 18mm Jorge, it was everything you said and more. Can't wait to see the new website!

Billy,

Thanks so much! Yes, than 18mm was a labor of love that took three of the best lens techs in the U.S. to realize. I had to ask Matt to send me a photo of the finished product.

You should see how the T1.4 set I just finished turned out. It took me forever, but the results are worth it. It's amazing how nice the feel of the focus can be on a Mk. I when the threads are cleaned, polished, treated with Emralon, lapped, and lubed with Zeiss grease. Very labor-intensive, but the results are great.

Can you give me a call later Jorge?.. I'm out for a meeting until noon then back in the shop... Also, can you send photos to my email?

There are three people I'll ever buy used lenses again from and you're one of them...

Best,
Billy
