I plan on spending a few months in Mumbai (mid-february thru may).
Is there demand to shoot with the RED camera in Mumbai, Delhi, or Goa? I'd like to get some work while living in India and I'm debating whether or not to bring along my camera (or leave it here in the US and let it work itself on rentals).
I'll insure it and provide it for a competitive rate in India and bring along my laptop to show producers/editors how to navigate the post world.

Anybody shooting RED in India please let me know!

Thanks,
Doug

Doug,

There is a fair bit of RED hype in Mumbai. Seems like the adoption rate will pick up. I am getting a fair bit of calls enquiring about the package. It takes a while for enquiries to convert to bookings, especially with the downturn.

But let me warn you it would be difficult getting a foot into the door. Unfortunately the Mumbai industry is not as open and tech savvy as LA/NYC/rest of USA.

Best,
Sandeep

Shooting In Mumbia

Shooting In Mumbia

Shot over there 2 years ago, all over India. We had to hire at least one 'Bollywood" crew member. Turned out to have absolutely no prior experience.

Good Luck,

Please send me a PM... we have a feature starting 1st week of FEB.

Anyone need one or two Red Camera kits

Anyone need one or two Red Camera kits

Doug - I hope you don't mind me jumping in on your thread...
My Red Cameras just finished a two-month feature shoot in Kolkata, and it seems they may be heading back to India later this month (New Delhi/ Mumbai). If anyone is interested in renting some very complete camera kits, and other items (Panasonic monitors, etc) please contact me. The Brain - I just PMed you.

Paul,

I have to say that my experience was good, but we have enough western talent on a set with 100+ that it may have been less of an issue.

I will say that it was not directly comparable to shooting with a good crew in NY, London or LA, but the crew I worked with was a decent lot. Keep in mind, Bollywood does more films in a year than any other market on the planet so there is without question some good talent in India. I think you may have had a rare bad experience.

Keep in mind, India isn't LA, London or New York, but if you keep things in proper perspective, shooting in India can be a rewarding, worthwhile experience.

I'd hate to color someone else's opinion before they get off the plane.

I'm planning to take my Red to New Delhi sometime this year. Can anyone offer advice for dealing with the RED and support gear at the airport in New Delhi? Any security restrictions or hassles to be aware of? Is there special insurance one can or should buy?

Red in Delhi

Red in Delhi

Hi,
Due to recent attacks in Mumbai and terror threats there is extra vigilence and security check on all airports .I would suggest the following :

1. Keep all the purchase invoices for the camera and other equipments with you.

2. Keep a printout of all the litrature of the Red camera and accessories because for them Red Camera may be alien.

3. If possible carry a workorder from the company for which you are working.

4. Pack your camera , lenses etc safely with double the packing.

5. Write fragile on the items you feel are breakable such as lenses etc.

6. Get a transit insurance for all the items.

You may not face any trouble at all because in India we welcome all visitors but incase you land up in some trouble you should have all the documents.

Have a nice stay in Delhi and if you have any plans to come to Calcutta let me know I get help you here locally.

Thks

Hey shooter,

You shouldn't have any problems in Mumbai with your equipment. I shot there a few years back without a glitch. I'd suggest taking the receipt for the camera so they don't charge you customs fees. This is all I take with me.

I'll be shooting all across India in a few weeks. Going from the Philippines to Papua New Guinea to China to Mongula to India and back home.

I'm not saying you're wrong - but can you say why showing the receipt avoids fees - I thought they charged about 30% just for importing a camera into India (at least that's what the customs guys told me at Mumbai Airport early November, right before I settled things with a $150 bribe).

I would love an opportunity to shoot in India, been wanting to go for quite some time. Anyone need a 2nd owner operator to tag along let me know. ;) I have been working to configure my R1 as small as I can to make my travels easier by attaching a 15mm mount (the Doug U. version) and going with mini arri accessories i have notice my RED shed a lot of wight. I recommend it.

Sorry, I should have made it more clear. If you don't have a receipt for the camera, then the border agent will guess at the value of the camera and base the customs fees off that value. If you are charged the customs fee when you arrive, they will refund it when you leave as long as you have the camera with you and the "importation tax" receipt. Sorry, I should not have said you won't pay customs fees.

Likely, the agent will only mark your passport that you're entering with a camera and then check that you have it on the way out.

I've shot in over 40 countries in the past 4 years and haven't paid a fee - ever. When you arrive, just be sure to walk through the "green zone" that says "nothing to declare" at the border. ;) If you get stopped, be sure to have a few hundred rupies in your pocket, it can go along way! haha!

Really the only time you're going to face any trouble is if you're bringing in two cameras. Several countries, including Peru, have begun levying a fee for bringing in more than one camera or more than 5 rolls of film. I always have a second DP with me to carry the other camera. It's also a reason I don't like to have big black, professional looking pelican cases with me; it shows that I've got camera gear.
