CAN anyone at RED give us an idea of when these cameras will realistically be available or should I just assume 'nevuary two thousand and never"...
I have a deposit on 2 REDs that I had intended to use on a feature later in the year being shot on location in Nigeria. But after Using a mates camera, I;ve come to the conclusion that the Red one is too bloody heavy and cumbersome for the sort of shots I have planned. Since I'd already made the deposit and the new cameras look like they'd be a better fit. I've been waiting to maybe get 3 Scarlets instead, but the bloody delivery dates keep changing and RED is notorious for basically never delivering on time. I see the scarlet now says Summer 2009, which would be great if it actually happens Since principal photography for my film starts in sept, october.
I guess my question is? is there even a prototype for these cameras or are they just getting everyone excited to be let down as usual.
After seeing Slumdog millioniare I'm almost inclined to go back to the Si-2k
During my intial research I went between the Si and the RED and finally went with the RED only because of it's over and under cranking capabilities.
But the weight and the ergonomics have made it very difficult to justify the camera choice to my financiers.
SO HONESTLY WHEN WILL THE SCARLET BE AVAILABLE...HOPEFULLY IN TIME FOR ME TO SAVE FACE...AND JUSTIFY MY CHOICE or I may be forced to go crawling back to beg for an SI-2k :shiftyph34r:

SI-2K is a nice camera. You do what you have to do. I'm waiting..., at least for NAB to see what they've got there.

...Then I'll wait some more.

...Then I'll wait some more.

Yes, you will... RED will not have any of the new cameras ready for NAB. RED is not going to have a booth at NAB.

If you like red and are holding out. RENT a R1 till the scarlet. You can rent a package for nearly nothing.

First off, I don't agree with the "hype us up to let us down." Red treats us like friends, they let us know what they are working on. Yes, they have missed dates set in the past, but how is this hyping us up to let us down. The reality for me is, take every date with a grain of salt. They are neck deep in CRAZY R&D. Things will happen that hold it up. Count on it.

That being said, betting that a new camera will come to market with in months or weeks of your Principal photography sounds a bit risky. If the R1 doesn't work for you, then start thinking other routes.

You do realize that even if the cameras do come out in time, they will go to current R1 holders first. As in by serial number. So they have to ask 5,000 other geezers what they want before you would even get the offer. For your fall project, it just ain't happening.

But the weight and the ergonomics have made it very difficult to justify the camera choice to my financiers.

And just to be a pain, why would the financiers give a hoot about the weight and ergonomics?

If these factors affect the style of what your are shooting, it's important also if the people shelling out the money aren't bankers and actually know about technology. These Kats are particularly paranoid about the cameras issue because they were burned by EX3s that were used to shoot an action short. (rolling shutter and muzzle flash from blank guns did not go down well).
So to answer your questions there are people who cut check that actually care and know the right questions to ask about the technology being used.
I want to shoot a lot of handheld and some documentary style Stuff in NIgeria, So yes and uncomfortable 25+ pound camera is one of their converns. They want the look that they are paying for.

In all fairness a lot of the Si-2k Mini shots in Slumdogs have made it harder for me to argue about the merits af a smaller, managable camera.you have no idea how many times they've brought up that movie in the last two weeks at my meetings with the "money guys"

Sean, I can feel your stress, but it doesn't seem very gracious of you to take it out on Red.

A camera is a tool. There are lots of great ones out there, including R1. If you're shooting in October, I'd in no way count on the Scarlet being available. There have been others who've scheduled feature shoots around gear -- and frankly, this is at best, completely unprofessional.

Be happy, make a decision, go with Si-2k. Incidentally, I just shot a feature in Africa (Ethiopia) on an EX1 because that's what budget allowed and they didn't want to even pay the insurance on my Red, never mind a token rental. I was skeptical of the EX1 as a feature camera (great for docs), but in fact it proved fine, got the job done with surprising quality, and the feature is now playing in several cinemas in Addis Ababa on 15 meter screens and to my astonishment, holds up beautifully.

Also, I don't know how much experience you have working Africa -- but I can tell you, money guys in Africa can be problematic, so be careful. Of course BS is universal as we know -- let's just say Africa is not immune.

I would remind your backers filmmakers make the film, not the camera. The hype over Slumdog (a bit excessive IMHO) has focused a lot of attention on the Si-2K, but it's the story, not the camera and the film could've been shot with any number of cameras. Of course the Si-2K is great, as is Red, as is the EX1 & EX3 and the F23 and Varicam, et cetera...

If you can find a Red rental package for "nearly nothing" in Florida, let me know. Cheapest I've found is $1000 a day. Rent it three times and there's a Scarlet.

I would bet the farm that RED dislikes not meeting deadlines more than any person on here.

They do disclose they have learned from this experience and Jim's signature specifically states to "COUNT ON" delays...

Whining also has not been successful in getting RED to disclose any secrets or hints as to release dates... at least in the threads I have read over the last month.

This company has the industry turned on its ear, and the RED ONE is still
an incredible camera... if they made nothing else, they would still lead
the industry...

instead, they reinvented their own wheel again!

That to me is worth waiting for... so while i understand you wanting a lighter camera, threatening to go get an SI-2K probably wont get you
much love on these boards... imho

good luck

oops, did I start a new thread?

sorry! I just discovered SEARCH today and now was trying my first "QUOTED reply to a post.

boi oi oi oing

LORD....
Sometimes I feel this board is a cult or something of the sort, my post has been so misconstrued that I wonder if any one actually read what I wrote.
I'm not taking anything out on RED it was a genuine concern/gripe.
I'm well aware that cameras don't make films but having the right tool (can make the Job easier).
I like RED despite all of what I consider it's flaws (nightmareish post production workflow prior to ADOBe plugin release...ADOBE plug in has made life so much easier)

Now everyone and their mum (including my company) has a RED one so buying two more may not be the bussiness investment it once was (sorry but trading in for the epic doesn't excite me.

Here's an antedote about how camera choice can affect creativity. I just directed a pilot shot on location in Harlem NY, and Montego Bay Jamaica. I had to shoot with two EX3s. We spent $7000, on an armourer, blank guns and blanks ETc. I Usually like to shoot a lot of action hand held with a dizzing amount of camera movement. The Sony Ex cameras have CMOS sensors (rolling shutter and all the crap it comes with).
Because I knew the trouble rolling shutter can cause I changed the style of the cinematography and action to minimize issues. I shot everything Sergio Leonne style (minimal camera movement). I did my best to accomodate and compensate for the flaws of sonys rolling shutter. I avoided a lot of it, but it stiffled creativity, and to add insult to injury the rolling shutter destroyed all my gunfights (partial exposure from the muzzle flash from the blank guns). So we spent money to get gunfights shot in camera and because of the camera most of the shots of weapons fireing could not be used. I was Pissed and this is after I did everything thing to avoid it (set shutter andgle, speed etc)....I was was begging for an HVX or anything with a bloody CCD by day 3 of the shoot. Anyways the point is the EX had good resolution etc but the bloody CMOS sensors on Sony cameras...so lets just say the DP who picked the EX3 is now enjoying New York states extended unemployment insurance, and we sold the EX3s as soon as we could after that job and replaced them with the New HPX170s.

My shoot dates are set for the film IN NIGERIA,(yes I've shot there before and the financiers aren't African, even worse they're Isreali, LOL...) I'm just hoping that maybe the scarlet is availabe by the time I have to shoot.
And why the bloody hell do people on here act like the Si 2k and the si 2k mini aren't great cameras...Even stevie wonder can see where RED got the idea for their new Camera bodies and design from....Come on people take a look at the s1 2k mina and look at the scarlet or any of the DSMC cameras and tell me "they're entirely orriginal"

but hey oppinions are like an anus, we all have one!

Prices, specifications, and delivery dates are subject to drastic changes. Count on it and you won't be disappointed.

Just a little reminder on why it's not prudent to schedule a shoot around an unreleased camera.
