  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlets rental price tag

1 million dollar...:)

i guess like the reds go out.

from 200 usd to 1500 usd depending on service and assecoires.

NO!!
rental market will not be lucrative at all.

The market will be saturated with scarlet cameras.. im seeing complete red one packages going for 500-700..
these are 30k min - 60k packages...

a fixed lens scarlet will go for..100$/day maybe.....
scarlet s35 - decked out full package 500-600/day
red one packages-will be hard to rent.

yes there will be a lot of gear for cheap like today.
but in a world with brains, digital here and digital there...you pay gladly for service...this is what my clients do.

different parts in the world make different prices..hell even the next nearest city has different prices.

and i dont think that rentals will get too low.
in 24-36 months when the digital world comes to real fast and painless workflows the whole Broadcast industry will move on to RED or SONY.

There is another timewindow to earn a lot.
if a tv channel moves to one system there will be a lot of systems, workflows to be supervised.

its worth it for a production (depending on length of production) to purchase a body these days (RED bodies).. the camera itself is a throw away. especially the low ball scarlets.
rentals will hold more weight in Lenses than anything else.
Camera accessories will still rent.
but honestly.. we will see some crazy shit in the next 2 years.

cameras will be a dime a dozen.

every tom, dick, harry and your mom will have one.

every production will purchase their own.

dont count on making a living or even money back fast renting.

before even getting close to making your money back.. there will be a NEW camera system.. example... red one vs the many scarlet options

sometimes even a red goes out for free, i still make 1000 usd a day.
i hope!!! there will be 10000 selling scarlets brains.

the cheaper the brain the better for me.
like i said...its the complete deal per day that will win...

Fixed lens Scarlet....

Rental rates should be comparable to that of HVX200 rates, OR LESS!!!

Rental rates for the S35 and FF35 scarlet systems will bring a bit more, but the camera body won't be what's generating any money. It will be the glass and other accessories that go with it. And even then, I don't see rentals being a money maker. Rental houses with established customer bases and lots of equipment to bundle will do just fine with Scarlet. Small boutiques or individual owner/ops will make more using the camera to generate content than they will by trying to rent it out. IMO, renting out a Scarlet wouldn't even justify the wear and tear on the camera body. If anything, I think we're going to see a massive devaluation of camera body rental rates over the next year or two. So many productions will get by just fine with a Scarlet S35 that now shoot on the RED One. If you want to make money renting out a camera body, you had better plan on buying the EPIC 645 or 617. And even then, don't expect to get rich... Over the course of a year, if you get in early, the 645 should pay for itself and possibly buy you a new tripod or something too. Once again, I think you could make a lot more money by trying to use it 2 or 3 days a week than you could by trying to find people to rent it.

Make people hire you for your skills, bring the camera along as part of the deal.

ok i gotta train my english again.
i agree that a camera body alone will not make money.
but there will be oppurtunitys to earn money with possibilities through a free body...its the loss leader

edit:/ fixed lens scarlet will not be rented inmho. and if so i guess for 50€.
it will have its market but will not affect imho the pl-camera market, which will be destroyed through scarlet s35.

free brains for everybody...count on it :)
still a lot to earn in the entertainment industrsy...
i see exciting times coming

Remember, every market is different. We did the same thing with the Red One. And what it has come down to is which market you are in. Los Angeles is saturated. New York is somewhat saturated as well. But other markets may have a lot fewer cameras, fewer rental companies, etc. Those markets can be tapped into and decent rates can be had. But like any other business, it comes down to marketing, talking to the right people, and informing your current client base about what you have to offer. There is no "One" rate. Someone in one market will rent their Scarlet for $50/day while another person in a different market offering same package might rent it out for $250/day. Both might do okay with their rates. Just depends on how much volume they do.

I don't think the price will be very low for rentals.

With the HVX you're already at overhead costs of running a rental business.

I assume the cost of the camera has no effect on the rental price once you get under $10k. At the very least you start to see significantly diminishing returns on your rental.

trust me.. in a dog eat dog world.. when everyone has a scarlet, and everyone is trying to make their money back on it.. you can bet your ass, scarlet rental rates will be retarded.

$100-$500/day (complete package)
depending on which model you have.

times are changing.

Just checked Canon 5D Mark II here. It goes for 130$ over one weekend, and this is a professional rate. Reminds me again how stupid it is to buy motion cameras (..without the necessary contacts to make it back on the next 3 months).
