dear all,

We are about to begin to shot a film for theaters. We are about to finish our tests about the camera red. And we decided to choose FCP prores for offline edit and native for online edit. But our DOP thinks that there is a quality difference between fcp native conversion and red cine raw data dpx render out. can you please inform us about the subject whether it is true or not ?

So, DPX to DPX comparison? How much correction was done in Color (I'm assuming this is what you are referring to) with the native R3Ds? Or did you just do a straight pass through to compare? Can you give a bit more info as to the chain of processing, and then could you provide some still images maybe to support what the DOP is referring to?

We Need Manuals(s)

We Need Manuals(s)

This is a perfect example of where there really needs to a manual(s) for using RED's software. When we spend $18,000+ for their product, do you think it is right that we have to do to youtube.com to learn how to work with our footage? I don't.

Joe, although I agree with you in principle, I think the difficulty is that there are many workflows, many ways to process footage. Add in the various ways in which people view footage for different destinations, film out vs. TV out, and you can begin to see why this is not an easy task. I thought Red made some nice progress in terms of documentation with their FCP Workflow guide. And I believe they have more of these types of things in the works.

The key to the Red apps is learning the interface (which doesn't take too long) and then doing a lot of tests to see what works for your postproduction facility. If you're a DP, then it's a matter of making sure you have a display that is giving you an accurate representation of what you are looking at. There is a lot of information in this forum about how to use these apps for certain situations. For example, the Big T thread is great for people who enjoy using a combination of the Proxies and Red Alert.

There's also places like fxphd.com that have courses on using the Red which goes over the Red apps.
